Hi all, having done a quick search but threads were old, thought I'd post anew.

Having contacted a lady about a horse for sale; in short a 17.3hh 8yo TB gelding. She mentioned he has a sarcoid which is being treated with some success she tells me.

Since doing a spot of research with his racing name I've found he was sold at auction relatively recently where it mentions he is hobdayed in the catalogue. Now on its own after reading up this doesn't seem to put everyone off but I am a little unnerved by the fact she hasn't mentioned this to me after enquiring about any past medical history and only mentioned the (outwardly obvious) sarcoid. I would also like my next horse for hunting, xc, showing and wonder if it would affect him negatively?

Personally I am now tempted to walk away as I wasn't particularly ecstatic over the sarcoid but this aswell has made me a little cautious, any thoughts of wisdom?

Would be nice if she'd mentioned it but if all else suited then neither would put me off ( assuming sarcoid is an area where it won't be affected by tack).

Very possible she doesn't know. Our old tb had what we thought was a prophet's thumb on his neck, but then we realised that it only appeared on his latter IDs from his racing days; he clearly hadn't been born with it. And actually, the position of it could have been evidence that he'd had some sort of wind op or a temporary tube fitted. But I'm guessing that, as we had no proof. He certainly had no wind issues with us (a little noisy at gallop maybe but nothing that affected his performance) and his vocal chords were definitely intact.

She would know the horse has been hobdayed by the fact that it cant neigh. She has to disclose this information - same as vices. Personally it wouldn't put me off, I would see it as a bonus as it has already been done rather than buying a horse, getting it fit and then finding out it cant breath and needs a wind op. I would be more bothered by the sarcoid. Yes it could be being treated succesfully but it may return, may scar, more may come, you might never see hide nor hair of a sarcoid on the horse again you never know.

J has a partial tie back, unless a horse is doing very very hard competition work it's unlikely to affect him .
The vet will advise you when you have him vetted.

I'd be more worried about the sarcoid than the hobday, but also wonder why she didn't mention the hobday. Then there is a hobdayed horse on our yard whose previous owner denied all knowledge. Guess she thought he had a permanent sore throat.

Some people probably don't know what those silly noises they make in lieu of a whinny mean.
The vet that vetted J missed that he had had a tie back ( he still has a slap response ) but I knew so it did not matter.

Personally I wouldn't buy a 17.3 tb fullstop and wouldn't touch him with a bargepole unless he raced after his hobday....do you know if he did? Did he finish his races ?

The vetting should cover the state of the horses wind if it's a five stage one .
I just noticed that OP wants to do some showing I would not buy a horse with sarcoids if I wanted to do that.

The seller said the sarcoid is being treated successfully and is shrinking but it was a bit of a concern as I know they can reappear or get worse or never come back. I would only entertain showing only with the right horse ive never been a big competitor but would like to go out and do a spot of local competition whichever the horse was suited to. So obviously this one wouldn't have been.

I couldn't find details of his performance on racing post although it said he ran 3 times and not sure when the hobday was done but it was done prior to auction which was in 2013. Seller did say he has a funny neigh after I mentioned the hobday but said she didnt know he'd had an op.

I am going to walk away from this one. Im in no rush to buy and am sure over the winter more will come up.

She would know the horse has been hobdayed by the fact that it cant neigh.

That's all very well if the horse neighs. My pony doesn't neigh at all and hasn't ever offered to, he doesn't even whicker even if around strange horses at shows.
