I'm trying to decide whether to hog and de-feather my cob!
It's a bit extreme, I know, but I feel we need a change!
My reserves about hogging/clipping are:

* What if I hate it!:( Although it should only take 6 months to grow back, which is only just the far side of Xmas.:)

* Will the flies annoy her with no forelock? Although flies seem to be to a minimum at the moment.

* Will it grow back as silky as before?

* Feathers keep any mud fever out, but they will be growing back by the time the mud comes, although feathers make it very hard to see any mud fever problems that are there.

My reasons to hog/clip:

* Keep getting mane tangled up in my hands whilst trying to do stressage.

* She is prone to feather mites, and clipped would be easier to see what I am dealing with.

* Wouldn't have to bandage her feathers out of the way everytime the farrier comes:rolleyes:

* I'm sure she'd jump better without all that wind resistance!:D

* I'd just love to see what she looked like clipped out, although I'd love to stick it all back on if I didn't like it.

Anyway, here's pic of the beast that would be hogged & de-feathered....

Opinions please :)

And feel try to show my yours!:)

I think your horse is a lovely traddy cob (Why change that?) If you're thinking about showing as a show cob then I think he's more of a traddy cob shape but if it's just for a change then why not... BUT why would you want to do that... he's sooooo lovely as is.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I knew you'd all say that!!:D

I know she's a lovely traditional but I just fancied a change:o Look I should really get my hair cut, as I really need a change and it needs doing, but I hate paying for things for myself, so might as well trim the beasty instead:D!

Maybe if I did a really tight running plait and bandaged her legs with black and white bandages then I could see what she looked like without having to actually do the deed.

Although she'd be so much cooler now she is working more and going out competing more. Ohhhh, it's so hard to decide:confused:, hence why I have thrown it all at you lot!!:D

I love hogged and trimmed cobs, but I will say some I would leave hairy.

Your girl is pretty with hair but I think she could carry off being hogged too....

My friends cobs are both hogged and trimmed( one has sweetitch so its easier to control) they get hogged regularly, about once evry 2 months, legs Im not so bad with, I clip them off when they are either looking scruffy or off to a show.

Heres some pics of them

It will grow back! If you don't have anywhere hugely important to be while she's in that hideous growing out a hog stage why not try it? If you hate it leave her be and it'll all come back! On a more practical note if she has leg mites AND mud fever I would be inclined to whip her feather of anyway. It's easier to prevent/treat mud fever etc when you can get right in and dry her skin off properly.

Ditto. I wasn't saying it just from a traditional point of view, as we have the hogged one too.

However.

I dont think she's typey enough to pull off hogged show cob look, I think she makes a lovely hairy and hogged would look a bit too dumpy and common [NOT offensively!!! I say the EXACT same about hairy....lovely traditional, but to me, gypsy cob types just do not make nice show cob types hogged out].

No!!!
I think she looks nice as she is. Some horses suit being hogged, some not and I'm afraid I don't think she would look as nice as she does now.

Oh No! I was so determined and decided that I was going to do it and now you're all making me think twice!!

And if their manes grow back even thicker:eek: yikes!

Might just get my own hair cut instead:o:D

I'm a big fan of Hogging. I hogged and trimed Lucy. But I have to say I love a traditional cob and yours is lovely. Please don't hog her :( :( Leave her as she is and post lots of pics of her on here so I can admire her and be very gelous ;) :p :D :D

Forgot to add...

It will take more than 6 months to grow back fully to 'hairy' state. 6 months will give you a 'normal' mane and average feather normally :)

However, you could clip her out, sort the mites and get them gone for good and then grow it back I guess :) Though clipping alone did not sort out the hogged cobby's mites, we had to do spot ons/injections/sprays/shed loads of other treatments too. And was covered in scabs underneathe which we found once clipped and had to keep picking them off and leaving them to grow out and be able to be brushed out [took about 5-6 months in total]. Touch wood, they've gone now. But going to have to be SO careful with his winter round. As it really is just a nightmare.
Arrrgh. Cobs hey!!!

She doesn't have mud fever, but am always worried she'll get it and it'll go un-noticed as I can hardly get to the skin on her legs to even look. WHich is why i struggle getting the pig oil and sulphur for mites on too.:(
We only do local level dressage, so don't go anywhere important and I can hardly ride in winter (dark nights, no school etc) so won't have anywhere to go then, when she's growing her mane out.

Am not offended Blinky, but if don't think she's got what it takes to carry off the hogged look, then maybe I shouldn't:(

Oh forgot to say (not sure if it shows on any pictures) but she has lost a lot of her lower mane, due to rugs over winter and possibly my terribly placed hands whilst riding:o:o. When I bought her last year she had lost some mane due to a companion foal chewing it. Maybe if it all went then it'll all grow back the right length???? Maybe???

If it helps, for general everyday riding....I always just do a quick plait at the bottom of the mane so the reins don't pull any out [or if I'm in a rush....just put it in a 'bunched' pony tail type thing]. And for the rest of the time...I just leave him in plaits, though you can get mane bags too :)

if any help my friend own the spitting image of yours!!!
she decided to hog him and take his feathers of and the next show he went in he qualified for uk showing and hes not got amazing paces
however since she took all his hair of he does seem to be a tad more bouncy i guess the hair must have weighed him down :) shall try to get some pics of him for you x

I think Frank's mane is exactly the same post hogging as pre hogging, though I would say at least a year not 6 months.

re the stressage/mane issue... I used to do an arab plait down the crest... I would also do this in hot weather and it was only a 5 min job. However it was still annoying so he is pulled now!

Well I'll take some pics of the hogged cob [who hasn't been hogged or trimmed since about May [so nearly 5 months now?].... For a comparison, seeing as 6 months is only a month away for him :) And he hasn't been rugged either and frequent hosing after work, so plenty cold exposure to keep the hair growing!

Got one of him from about a month ago...

Physiologically that doesn't make sense ;) Might be that it would look thicker because there's a full mane of it grown back, rather than say 10% that has broken off/been shed in natural grooming etc, bits that are all uneven length giving the natural look instead of all one length etc. Over time it would get back to normal, I am positive.

However, you do have to go through a punk rocker stage first, which is a bit of a nightmare to say the least!

I don't think you should hog and trim your mare. I think if they have heavy legs then a) their trimmed feather does not look like normal hair, its too coarse and b) a cob of show cob type usually has finer legs. I also rather feel she has a very pretty face framed with a forelock, but might look a lot coarser without it, and a true show cob type should have the head of a lady and a backside like the cook ;)

So in short, don't do it, but DO go and get your own hair done, otherwise regardless of what your cob looks like you will still feel scruffy and in need of a trim yourself ;) :D

She is absolutely gorgeous just the way she is ;) No way on this earth would I hog her

Slap on the pig oil and sulphur, and you'll be right. sm xx

She is lovely :) How big is she? I think she would make a supper show cob if she is 15.1 plus hog & trim :)

She's only 14.3hh, so no show cob there I'm afraid.

Yes, I agree she might look a little coarse without her forelock, Naturally. She's certainly got the cook's backside but not a very lady like head!:D

On a quick tot-up, I have 4 people saying DO IT, and 7 saying DON'T.
My YO/friend has just text me and said she doesn't know either:confused:. She says possibly do her legs and pull her mane if continuing to stressage or if wanting to show (not really wanting to do that) then don't do either.

Ok, so anyone for whip the legs off and pull the mane????

well she is a stunner that is for sure,
it will take a year before she has her mane back, by xmas it will be like a mohawk sticking up. she would suit a hog, as for feet is she used to clippers cause once you start and she doesnt like them, there is alot to finish if she is nervous ofr them. she would be stunning hogged but to maintain you would have to keep it up, or let it grow out.
she is that cute she would suit anything, it will always grow back in find the mane grows back thicker, but once it gets to her lenght again it should be slickly. i love the look of hog, but i love traditional too. tough call, but for looks wise dont worry she would suit it, leaves them very smart looking.
