I've given in and I'm going to hog coblet, his mane is super thick, he won't let me pull it, its really messy and takes about 2 hours to plait with thread, its too thick for bands!

However I really like his forelock and IMO he doesn't have a pretty enough face to take it off!

Ive seen it done a couple of times, has anyone got any opinions or pictures of their hogged horses?

Thanks :)

I used to hog my thoroughbred (I know, I know!) as neither he, nor I agree with pulling and his mane was thick! I always left his forelock on, he'd look too much like a polo pony without it.

Suppose with a cob it would depend on how thick the forelock is. If you're hogging him anyway, just leave the forelock til last and see how he looks.

I used to hog my old hunter but leave the forelock - I kept it pulled short in the winter to pop a plait in on hunting days, then let it grow longer in the summer for fly protection.

If you are not hogging for the show ring, I don't see why it matters if you leave it personally!

Take it all off!!
I started hogging my cob about 2 years or so ago, she was difficult to plait or go anywhere near with a comb or rake!

Take it all off! This is our old boy, he looks much better hogged than with a mane!

I had to hog Bilbo because of lice! I have never been a fan of hogging but I do think he looks nice with it done. His forelock had to come off too but the plus is it is such fun to rub as it is all velvety! He will have a fly fringe in summer.

Ooh, he looks good hogged.

When I worked in america every foal from a few weeks up to a year and a half and every broodmare were hogged.
However we left the bit on top of the withers and the forelock alone.
It looks a bit odd at first but now i kind of like it.
The bit on the withers os to hold on to whilst riding in from the field bareback, and the bit on the forelock is for flies. I have been told its to lead a horse with if you dont have a headcollar. Dont know about that bit though!
This horse in the first picture has it...

We hogged my best mate's 17hh ShirexTB bcause his full neck rug had removed half his mane - and for the next six months he had great difficulty getting on and off, he hadn't realised how much he relied on a good handful of mane to steady himself!! Be warned!!
