Holidays/nights off if you are DIY?

I never wanted my children to be looked after by anyone else, and they never were unless it was by my mum, but having a break is good for all concerned and you obviously NEED ONE.

Get over my self eh...? Have you actually considered that to some of us, having a day off involves spending it with our horses...? What with having a full time job and running my yard, plus keeping all my other animals and helping my mom and dad out with their little venture, spending time with my horses is my time off, i thoughrly enjoy it, its my release, my escape from my very busy life. I havent said its what you should do or any body else for that matter, i was just stating its what i choose to do and NO I DONT OBVIOUSLY NEED A HOLIDAY. Oh and btw i know i'm not alone in my thinking, i know several other people who are the same.

I think it very much depends on your circumstances whether you chose full livery, part, DIY or whatever.
Bear in mind though, that whilst YOU may be able to spend every spare moment at the horses, some of us have other, unavoidable, and at times quite unhappy commitments to deal with, and everyone has to do the best they can, hopefully without feeling judged.

I get what your saying Shils, and i'm very fortunate that i have my horses at home (taken 22 years of hard graft with my parents to get my own place), but with all my commitments i dont actually spend very much time with them. I'm up at 5.30 in the morning to do them before work, then get an hour and a half at most, most days in the evening with them, so when i get a day off from work etc, i make the most of it. Unfortunatly i have to work damn hard for a pittance of a wage (thrying to change that) to keep them and savour every moment i have with them. I didnt write what i did to place judgement on anyone, i wrote what i did because its what i choose to do and i dont have anything against any one for the way they run their lives. I just dont appreciate someone who doesnt know me or my life telling me 'to get over my self' I would never say that without knowing their situation.

I have an arrangement with a currently horseless but highly competent friend. She will look after horses when needed and can be trusted 100%, and will lunge or hack out if required as well.

In winter it is harder. To be honest, I tend to pay for full livery with my trainer if I go away in the winter (for that reason it is a bloody rare occurrence).

Yeah pretty crap tbh and has completly thrown me, lack of concentration, my eyes going funny, cant think straight, and yeah been to the docs, had the tests, had my eyes checked and cant find anything wrong! Oh joy of joys!!!

My annual 'holiday' is a 3 day event and horse comes along too by necessity! However this year I had a week long course away from home and it was the first time I've left my horse in 5 years

I got a friend to do her - my friend is away for training quite often and I do hers then, so it worked out quite easily. If she had also been away then my YO would have done it.
 
Im going away for a week in a week or so, other DIY's are checking my lad is ok, have asked a friend to check him too, but then she found out she was going away too - but suspect she will be coming back anyway so hopefully... :-) I'll be texting them most days just to check, but know they will be on the phone if anything is wrong! Would rather have a vets bill! Last year we went away for 2 weeks, my ponios went to a friends who has her own place and ponios, then they went away a few days after we came back, so mine stayed there and I went over eery day and looked after hers and mine! So worked really well!
 
I have my lot at home.

Eldest son is rather good at checking on them, as is the mother in law. They'll call me numerous times a day to make sure this, that and the other is fine.

As for liveries. I have one. If she wants to go away, is ill, etc etc I am more than willing to check on, change rugs, bring in, turn out, muck out, feed etc etc her horses for her.

One of the many perks of having your YO living on site and being into horses herself. .

When I go away for holidays or for work my YO looks after them for me and I pay for the extras - this year one of the other liveries is now working as a freelance groom so I will pay her to excercise them for me if I am away for more than 2 nights.

I live at the yard so do not get nights off do as the other liveries do and only come once a day in winter - I am there for mine (and others) at both ends of the 95% of the time. I love my holidays as I get a break from work,horses, dogs etc and come back refreshed and actually missing them - not work obviously.....

I am in the fortunate postition of sharing this place with my sister, this means that if I go away, or if she goes away, there is someone there who knows what to do in any circumstances. We can't ever go to the same place at the same time and I would say neither of us goes for more than 4 days at a time

We also ring each day (at least once!) to check that all is ok. Last year sisters horse had rectal prolapse when sister was away (she came back) It also meant when sister broke her ankle her horse (and dogs and cats) were looked after much the same as usual. (her sister however was totally cream crackered after 8 weeks! )
 
In the UK I used to share a yard with a friend I trusted implicitly. I'm now on full livery (yeah, right!) and I still feel obliged to take my broken collarbone down to the yard every day to make sure the beds are mucked out, foalie gets his antibiotics, etc etc

When I go on holiday she goes back over to her owner's fields for the time I am gone, it works well because I know she is in the best hands possible and she gets her beloved baby back from the step mummy for a week

if for any other reason I couldn't look after her I have a small chain of friends and I also trained up my OH specially (in case of dire emergencies).
