hi all, i am sick of buying fly spray and it cost so much, i go through so much. so thinking why not make some, have you any homemade remedys that is quick and easy to make that really work. thanks in advance

Avons SSS is brill, get it from ebay - you can get 3 x bottles for under £8, far cheaper than going to avon direct :)
Works well on everyday flies but not so well on horseflies, TBH i don't know anything that works for horse flies

only thing that repels every type of insect that annoys my horse is leovet powerphaser. bout 12 pound a bottle but is very strong so you dont need to use much and lasts a while

I tend to make 5 litres at a time and then decant into a garden pump sprayer. My basic ingredients are:

Cold tea (the bulk liquid)
Vinegar
SSS Avon
Citronella
Garlic
Detol (small amount)

I always vary the amounts, its not rocket science. However, i have never yet been able to completely stop horse flys (horrible winged beasts), but my mare has very sensitive skin to all flying insects, and this definately helps, especially as i use such huge amounts

We have just started using this and must agree it is very good . Lasts up to 7 hours I believe. Mind you it does smell very strong so I'm not surprised it keeps the flies away. Even the assistant in the local saddlery commented when we bought it. Good product though.

Heres my recipe

5 mls Citronella Oil
1 tsp Fairy Liquid
4 tsps Vinegar
2 tablespoons Methylated Spirits
1 cup Strong Cold Tea
Cold Water to 2 litres

Last year I added a small bottle of TCP to it , it stank but the flies didn't like the smell either :D

thanks for answers, anymore homemade recipes that work please add. thanks also like the sound of avon, but bottles look very small. i have 9 horses so go through alot. so looking for a great proven homemade remedy.
that i can keep making up.

yeah when i first put it on my mare she snorts and walks off but will stand eventually. can smell her a mile away though-just diluted the remnants of my bottle with 3 parts water 1 part solution and it still works.

When I was running a riding school I used to make up citronella with surgical spirit and spray that on...or use a sponge if the horse didn't like sprays :) They smelled lovely and the flies stayed at bay until basically the horse got warm with exercise. Now I am trying Think Fly which adds to the feed. I started in February to allow a build up in the system and I can only say that it is FAB stuff, when I hack out I get the flies :( and the horse doesn't:)...perhaps I should sprinkle some on my tea lol. Also they are leaving the horses alone in the fields and stables too. I was VERY sceptical about it but it seems to work. Probabaly too late to start it this year as it obviously nees a build up. No I am nothing to do with the company or on commision before you ask!!

For effectiveness you do need to spray a chemical based fly repellent, unfortunately. However, you could try feeding brewers yeast alongside, which may help.

my recipe

To make 2 litres (in an empty pop bottle)

1 litre cold stewed tea
1 litres water
10 drops citronella oil
10 drops neem oil
5 drops lavender oil
5 drops tea-tree oil
50ml Avon SSS
Splash of vinegar

Citronella repels flies and insects, Neem protects against lice and mites, Lavender soothes and heals (if bitten), Tea-tree is an antiseptic to prevent infecton (if bitten), vinegar adds acidity that insects dislike, Avon SSS provides benzylbenzoate a strong insect repellent.

This mix smells EXACTLY the same as Carr, Day and Martins FlyGuard spray.

this sounds great, going try it 2morrow. thanks

thanks heading down now to buy some oils, think i might put some garlic in mine, what you all think.

well went down town and the prices is mad for oils, cheaper to get the product in tack shops made up. so looked on ebay and the prices it great so getting them on it. also read up more on the oils and just to let you all know.
NEEM OIL cant be used if you are trying to get a mare infoal or if a mare is infoal. only can be used on maiden mares or geldings/ stallions. also lavender oil cant be used in 1st stages of being infoal. so just to let you all know incase you are using this. can cause a mare to abort or not concieve.

i am going to mix citronella oil and lemon grass, teatree, eucalptus, cedarwood, bog myrtle mixed with garlic oil and water and tea. but you know when you use all of this its not really much cheaper and than buying it made up. going to try it anyway also using avon sss in the mixture.

I use for 1 Litre
100ml White vinegar
5 ml citronella
1 ml tea tree oil
1ml eucalyptus
1ml lavender
1ml cedarwood
plus a few drops of washing up liquid to emulsify the oils then make up to 1 litre with cold water.
The cheapest I have found for oils is Oils for Life

yes buy the oils online, much much cheaper.

The neem oil is optional really as it is actually solid at room temperature but i still add it so it infuses in the spray and helps ward of mites etc.

If you add garlic powder i would suggest putting the garlic powder in a bowl with some water and leave it over night - then strain the powder out and use the liquid. Also dont allow tea bags to 'explode' as any tea leaves, garlic powder left in the final mix will clog up your spray nozzle.

I calculated it cost me less than £1.50 to make up 2 litres, so considering i used to pay £11 for the shop bought stuff i am more than happy :)

ok, bought this on ebay 10mls of each, what way would you make it up and how many litres do you think i could get out of this. going to mix with cold tea some infused with garlic. didnt get avon as want to try with out it. but might add few capfuls of dettol and few drops of fairy liquid.

citronella oil
lemon grass,
teatree,
eucalptus,
cedarwood,
bog myrtle
so what way would you mix this up, its 10mls each, how many litres would i get out of this. it all came to £14.20 for six 10mls, bog myrtle was most expensive at £5.00, but it seems to be a good one. anyway thanks to all of you, and carry on answering what you think of what i am mixing.

you only need about 10 drops of each in 2 litres as the oils are super concentrate.

The oils should last you a decent time :)
