I was contacted last night by the son of a couple who had a puppy off me nearly 11 years ago. I knew the wife (who was a good friend of mine) had passed away with cancer nearly 2 years ago, and now tragically her husband has had a massive stroke and the best prognosis for him is that he will recover sufficiently well to go in a nursing home, not sure of his exact age but barely 60:(. The son lives in a small flat, and has a partner who is severely allergic to all things furry.
Now normally I would be inclined to say at 11 he should maybe consider having the bitch pts, but he says she shows no signs of age, and as I have her litter sister who is also very fit, and only lost her mother in October just short of 14 years old, I am inclined to think it is worth trying to find a home for her. The son is prepared to contribute towards her keep, and pay any vets bills etc that she may incur. Poor Saffie (she has the same name as her sister very confusing) has been in kennels for the past 5 weeks, although he does go and walk her whever possible, and he is desperate to find her someone more permanent.
She is not good with other bitches, this is why I can't have her back as I have 3, but adores adults and children alike.
I would be so grateful if anyone reading this would bear her in mind and mention her to anyone you may feel could help. She is in the Reading area at the moment, and ideally I think he would like her to stay in the south, but it is not essential.

Goodness if I could help, I'd take her immediately.

Poor lady, I hope they find a good home for her soon. Have they put notices up in local vet practices???

I have advised them to do that. At first it was hoped that he would make sufficient recovery to go back home, with help, in which case Saffie would have stayed with him. Sadly it now seems they are facing the awful situation where his home will have to be sold to pay for the nursing home care

Sorry to be as much help as a chocolate teapot over here, but fingers crossed there is a happy outcome.

Dex at 11 was very sprightly, even with her wonky front leg, I can understand why they want to find a good home for her.

Thanks for your thoughts. I feel so bad that I can't take her, was awake half the night trying to work out if it was possible, but I really don't think she would integrate with my girls, and don't even have a kennel outside she could go in so it is a non- starter.

Not sure if this will be of any help to him, but it really is not far from the Reading area. They may have foster homes or a waiting list of people who may be able to help.

I wish I could help out but I have two females too. x

I wil have a think too. What a shame she isn't good with other bitches as my old dog trainer lost one of his GSD xmas eve but he still has 2 bitches. What a terribly sad story & what a lovely son he sounds to be doing all he can.

As far as I know yes, am going to speak to the son again tonight and try and find out more. I was so shocked last night that one family could have such rotten luck I didn't get all the facts. I know them through the late wifes mother. In the past few years this lady has lost her husband, son and daughter to cancer, and now this has happened to her son in law.

Breeze-mum and Bearhuggz, thanks for the info on biggsd. Have spoken to them and am going to get her info put up on their website. Happy birthday breeze-mum.
