My coach has recommended putting my horse on an oral hyaluronic acid supplement to help the joints as we are starting to proceed to bigger tracks and he is 19 so on the older side. My coach says I can make it by simply mixing hyaluronic acid with water (15g in 1900ml) however giving my horse something with the word "acid" in it without any approval makes me very nervous. Can any of you chemistry experts/ horsey experts tell me if this is at all safe? Side note I have tried hyaluronic acid injections however she tried to kick the vet several times so we think orally is the best way:)

The only liquid hylauronic acid I'm aware you can buy off ebay or the like, is the stuff in a bottle for your face. You can also buy HA is an equine supplement in powder form, its usually added to joint supplements.

I'm pretty sure you can't give liquid HA orally but I'm not a vet.

I think your friend is mistaken.

You can get it where it is added to a powdered supplement for joints but never heard of it in liquid form on it's own for oral use, only as a face treatment for your skin.

It can be injected directly into a joint normally alongside a steroid.

There is a liquid HA supplement available -it's called Lubrisyn. I tried it years ago, and didn't find that it made a lot of difference, whereas steroid and HA intra-articular injections worked a treat. I'm fairly sure I've read a paper which concludes that HA isn't particularly well absorbed when given orally.

thank you for your replies everyone! i meant a powder to be mixed into water however if its not going to be absorbed then there is no point in me giving it a go! :):)

No personal experience but I do know of horses that have had HA injections as maintenance rather than as a treatment for an existing condition eg in the hocks where there is no X ray evidence of wear but I don't think taking it orally would have the same effect.

I'm sure there's an echo somewhere ?
