Blimey, I didn't want to distract the thread any further by posting a reply to HH's post but since it's still going and I agree with some of HH's sentiments:
1. Yes I would agree my tone was inappropriately hasrsh because I misread what AmyMay had said. Since I strongly believe in reading posts very carefully and not misinterpreting them it is inexcusable that I got that wrong.
2. Most of my orignal post made a geneal point about the vet forum which was also inappropriate as it hijaked the thread. I do have some issues to raise about the vet forum and I'll post them on a separate thread sometime soon.
3. In the course of researching the value of the vet forum I've read way over 10,000 posts. It never occured to me that this would seem a lot because in research terms it only takes a few hours and is pretty feeble as an evidence base. Normally I would expect to have done at least several hundred hours research for subjects I comment on on HHO. Looking at 1,000 posts (< 1 hour) is embarassingly little basis on which to form an opinion so I apoloigise for not reading more and being more thorough.
4. My post was neither firendly or unfriendly it was emotionally neutral. My priority is to ensure that I present information clearly and unambiguous so I use a style of writing similar to that which one would find in text books, legal documents or scientific pubications. On an open forum, I am in the absolute minority writing in this way so in comparison to the friendly chatty style of most correspondents it may appear unfriendly. If you've read several of my posts then hopefully you will begin to notice they are not as serious as they first appear.
Tia you are wrong about so many things I couldn't let you be wrong about the inevitability of me replying to your generous comments
Someone who goes out of their way to read 1,000 posts is, to me anyway, showing stalker tendencies.
Actually it's showing researcher tendencies. What you are missing is the amount of research that it is necessary to do in order to form an informed opinion. This doesn't surprise me as the threads in which we have both posted ususally involve me trying to explain to you why you are hopelessly misguided in your opinions.
Puddicat; you seem to have a problem with a lot of people on here
Despite all the evidence you just don't get it that I'm not interested in people, only the contents of their posts. I don't have problems with people, only with what they say. If you look at all the discussions we have had you will see that they always involve me challenging something you have said that invariably turns out to be wrong (don't believe me? I'll PM you the thread links and you can count up). If you continually post rubbish then I guess there is a good chance I might end up pointing that out in several threads but it would wrong to assume that means I have any interest or views of you as a person. I don't do all the emotional personal stuff I'm only interested in the quality of information in posts. I don't care whether you ride horses, own horses, are Gods gift to horses and I have no view whether you are a "valuable member" of HHO or not.
I couldn't tell you how many times we have rung the vet for advice (and yes, it is a renowned specialist equine practice), and been told to give bute. This assumes that we have a supply of the stuff, which is surely the responsible thing to do? It is no different from keeping Ibuprofen in a home first aid kit.
Yup it is different, Ibuprofen is on the General Sale List (GSL) and bute is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM - you'll find this abbrev. on the packet). You can stock pile as many GSL drugs as you want but POMs are controlled and you can only get them if you have a "reason" to have them. Normally that would be an animal which has received a diagnosis for which a presciption has been written for the amount necessary. Don't want to make this a long post so if interested it is worth chatting to your vet sometime about what the possible definitions of "reason" are in this context and what your obligations are in administering POMs
So would you like to say what you are going to do with all your "research" you have been collecting on us all? I for one would be most interested in how you plan to use the information.
I also wonder about the ethical issues here - if you are using everyone on this forum as guinea pigs for your work, doesn't it beg the question; do you think you should perhaps ask peoples permission to use their material? Or at least IPC's permission?
And finally, are you being paid for performing this "research" on us?
Right, for those interested....the vet has been out. She doesnt reckon it's an abscess.
She gave us 2 choices - (1) Box rest and 2 bute a day for 7-10days, then see how she is. If no improvement, take her in for nerve blocks, scans and x-rays. (2) Take her in now.
So i asked what the vet would do if Molly was hers and she said she'd try the box rest first. So thats what we've gone with (much to Molly's disgust!)
We asked what else it could be. She said it could just be a tweaked tendon/ligament/muscle or it could be related to her foot conformation - she's slightly pigeon-toed - arthritic changes?? Or it could be something else. Anyhoo's, we shall see. Fingers' crossed.
Thanks to those who offered advice. And apologies for starting a debate!!
