Like many I expect, I ride on varied terrain, including lethal grassy and smooth, slippery slopes. Recently I'd seen horsey sites advertise studs for boots and so I thought I'd invest, but bought the studs for a fraction of the price from icespike.net. 6 studs into each front boot (backcountry) and 4 into each hind (the new transition boots, also easyboot).
The result was fantastic today! Primarily I wanted studs for icy weather, hence buying ice studs, but reducing slippage on grass is such a bonus! The weather was truly foul and the amount of rain we've had means that the ground can't be any wetter. I was so confident by the time I reached our sloping hay field I rode down it for the first time in weeks.
So, if you have a barefoot horse or one who loses confidence in slippery conditions, I'd highly recommend these! They're shallow enough that riding on stony ground isn't an issue, but that extra purchase made all the difference to me and Henry. Shame about the weather, though!
