I have decided to try going barefoot with my IDx, he is 17 this year, he has had shoes for all his ridden life (bought him at 4 years old already backed and shod). I took the hinds off about 2 years ago and he didn't seem to notice (they look better than ever), so this winter I took the fronts off too (he usually takes them off himself in the mud anyway
).
The sudden hard ground has left him occasionally feeling his feet, especially where it is still a bit rutted from the winter (absolutely fine on the roads). Farrier is not concerned, says they are hardening up nicely, but I would like to start doing more work with him now the weather is finally looking better, and a lot of our hacking routes are stoney ground, so I was thinking of trying him in some hoof boots.
I have been looking at sizing guides for different makes, but nothing seems to be exactly right. His feet are quite long and narrow, and he's lost some hoof wall to the inside, which makes them measure up even narrower!
Does anyone have any recommendations for brands of hoof boots that are good for narrow feet? Or is there some padding I could use to stop the boots turning while he is wearing them?
I saw the cavallo entry level boots width sizing is stated as 'up to' a certain width, so would this be good?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post!
