hi, i just wanted some advice about my horsey. He is shod on the front, his backs are barefoot and good. He is fed Happy Hoof and i give him a biotin supplement, as recommended by his previous owner. Anyway, his front feet tend to be a bit crumbly. The farrier mentioned it yesterday. I was just wondering if i'm giving him the right things or if there is anything else i can do. i use a bog standard solid hoof oil, about once a week on the soles and outside.

How long has he been on this regime'? sounds as if for a while. Biotin doesn't work with all horses, so you may want to try something different. One thing you definately need to change is the hoof oil. Find something water based, not an oil.
Did your farrier not suggest anything to help?

I used Dodson and Horrell supplement for hooves and make my own hoof oil from stockholm tar and vegetable oil. Works for mine who couldn't keep a shoe on for 5 weeks and now hasn't lost one for 2 years (touch wood) - although my farrier is a genius!

Kevin Bacon hoof dressing is very good - my TB with terrible feet is unshod behind and his feet have hardly cracked at all even with no rain and hard ground for about 2 months! He also gets biotin supplement with methione and zinc, and I put on the KB about once every 2 - 3 days

I have had really good results feeding the naf profeet range (liquid seems more palatable) and switch between naf hoof rub and cornecrescine. Never got on with the kevin bacon stuff although my Farrier had recommended it

This is what I wrote on an earlier post today

I use these two things on my horses very dry, crumbly feet

This one gets used 3 days a week (anymore and the hooves will become to soft)

And then I use this one on the other days (it makes his hooves look pretty

Seems to work really well, he has only lost one shoe all summer which is a record for him!
