I bought my new horse 5 months ago and at first I thought 'what the hell have I done!' He wouldn't stand still to get on him, he was nappy, couldn't walk in a straight line, couldn't even get him out the field sometimes, developed into a mild headshaker etc etc.
Well after 5 months he is like a different horse and I'm beginning to fall in love with him! He has stopped all the negative things above, he comes over to me when I call him and when I turn him out he wants to come back in with me! Even the headshaking has been greatly reduced with NAF shake relief and a nose net.
I ride him 5 - 6 days a week and I feel we are finally building up a partnership and he's improving loads in our lessons.
I just wanted to tell people who have new horses and are still unsure of them that it's not always love at first sight and things can work out. I can't remember how many times I was writing an advert out in my head to sell him on, I'm so pleased I stuck with him and persevered. We still have a long way to go but I'm enjoying the process.
Good luck to all those out there with your new horses, I know it's not always easy.

I was like that when I first bought Bob. 7 months after getting him he was nearly being sold!!! We have perservered (pretty sure he was just as fed up with me!) and we had our 4th anniversary in June.

I wouldn't change him for the world, he is a massive part of our family now.

Ditto. After the 'Honeymoon Period' passed my horse and I had a sticky few months. I went a step further and did advertise him! Thankfully a friend talked me out of it and helped me through (luckily quite quickly as peope were wanting to come and see him!). Two and a half years on I wouldn't part with him for the world, even though he can still be a prize prat at times!!!

thank you for your post - I have a new horse and I do wonder what I have done sometimes! But I am starting to fall for him, not sure he feels the same yet though!

Bob still sometimes has his moments of being a complete effing spanner (usually in front of spectators!!) difference now is I have the confidence to deal with it and he knows it.

His days of taking the p*ss are definitely over!!!!

i have had my welsh Sec D for 11 months now - had weekly lessons and have only just strated to be able to what i call 'ride' him so the best advise i can offer any new horse owners is 'dont rush anything - be prepared to take things slowly' x
