:) Good News... Had a text from YM yesterday... Horlicks is up for sale and I have first refusual!!

:( Not so good news... One small problem YM wants (what I think is) too much for her!!

I really don't know what to do... I was in tears last night, as the thought of loosing her for good makes me feel sick (sad I know!)
A few years back, I lost a horse I really got on with due to his owner selling him, and I didn't have the money at the time. Now I have found "the one" I really don't know what to do!

YM wants 4k for her, with no tack/rugs etc... she has only just come back into work after being off for 6 wks due to her back, and then loosing her shoes. She has whiteline disease at the moment and has a funny rear fetlock - not a lameness, more of an unbalance, which is helped by good farriery.

My Instructor and close friend says I could make an offer, and get a vet in to look at back, feet and fetlock and advise if a) its all "repairable" issues, and b) what he thinks she is worth now, not when I have put the money and time into her to get her competition fit.

I am so confused. My heart says sell the car (which I was planning to do anyway) and get her - it'll be tough, but I'll manage some how! My head says get off my fluffy cloud and just tell YM you can't buy her. I really didn't think they would sell her, not now anyway!

I had my lesson on her last night (first time in a while) and my instructor said after seeing her with rider in the previous lesson, it shows just how much we click, and how much she uses her back when I do ride her!

In all honesty, I really think this is going to be goodbye :(
Anyone feeling generous???

If she's the one, I would fight for her!

Or at least not say goodbye before speaking to the vet & exhausting every option...

Where there's a will, there's a way ;)

Oh no!! What a horrible situation for you to be in.

I think sometimes you just have to go with your heart on these things. She sounds like a lovely mare, i would make a cheeky offer and see how it goes.

If you dont ask you dont get.

Oh dear I feel for you - I remember reading previous posts when you wanted to buy her and they didnt want to sell her and I always follow your posts as she looks lovely. I cant advise what to do as I paid too much for my horses and bought with my heart and not my head but I love them dearly. Dont say goodbye yet go over everything in your head and with advice from your instructor and vet make an offer - if its meant to be its meant to be. good luck xx

It is a difficult decision to make. Buying your one and only horse is not always sensible financially its about what the horse is worth to you. I paid too much for my boy 2 years ago but we have have had and are having so much fun i dont regret it for one minute. To me he is worth his weight in gold, even if not to someone else.

If you have the vet check her and she can do the activities you want and you have the money, make an offer and fate will decide.

Good Luck

Bum! Sorry I know how much you love this horse.

Ok being practical for a moment....How much do you and your instructor think she is worth? If it is not a silly amount (under what they are asking) then I would offer that subject to vetting.

Could it be a case do you think of they are asking the 4K as they know you adore her?

As my trainer says (he is a bit of a harsh old sod! so sorry) "only true price for a horse is dependant on how much it weighs after that it is all emotion on both sides, how much the owners is convinced it is worth and how much the buyer has to have it".

Don't give up yet!

How old is she? Is she an easy ride? What I am trying to say is, would she be worth 4k to anyone else? If not, then do not worry too much - the market is so slow at the moment and really good, competiton fit horses are selling for less than that. Perhaps get her vetted - if she fails you have some bargaining power. Also, the owner will then realise she will not get the 4k she wants. I would fight for her, but I would not let her panic you into paying too much for her - horses really are not selling very well, and I doubt for 4k she will have a lot of immediate interest.

Could YM be playing on the fact that she knows how you feel about Horlicks which is why she is asking so much? I would have the vet look at her and then make her an offer based on his findings.

Good Luck x

Four options as I see it:

* Say thanks and borrow the money for the tack
* Say yes, £4K, but throw in her tack
* Make a cheeky offer of £3K and budget on up to 1K for tack
* walk away

Three of these options are just around the budget you have listed in your sig.

Perhaps you ask your YM if you can pay for the horse in monthly/ weekly installments kind of like paying a loan :)

Then you can get Horlicks (who sounds lovely) and not have to pay a lump sum of money :D

I know how much you love horlicks, but I also go with OP and get her vetted and then see what your options are then.
I think YO is playing on your heart with that price:)

My instructor says offer 3k, no more. She also said for 4k you would get a competition fit horse, that doesn't have any "issues" like bad back etc, and would probably already be proven (if only lightly) in the ring.
I know YM is playing on my heart strings, and is hoping I will be careless with my money, but I have a figure in my head, and plan to stick to it.

We all know how cr*p the market is at the moment, but I am worried someone who has too much money and no common sense will splash the cash!
YM kept saying she wants me to have her, as she knows she won't be wasted and that I would take her competing etc, and potentially do really well with her...

I am going to call my local vet's at lunch and see how much he would charge to check her over - not a "vetting" as such, just a "is she worth putting an offer in" kinda thing. I have already drawn up some price lists for yards etc (DIY, Part etc etc)

Just thinking on it again. You finish your post by saying that you think it's going to be goodbye. My suggestion would be go back to YO and put in the £3K offer valid for, say, 6 weeks. Reason being that if you don't put in a firm offer YO has no way of knowing how serious you are. If she doesn't know you are serious and then someone comes along and knocks her down to £3K you would be gutted but if your offer is firmly on the table then you have more chance that she will come back to you.

Ooooh Lippy I don't know weather to be pleased for you or not

Horlicks means so much to you that I think you have to fight for her, but that doesn't mean the YO can rip you off!

I like the idea of offering 3k but I do think it's important that you get some sort of vetting done!

Everything crossed that this works out for you!!

I agree with whoever said consider how much she is worth to you, not just in the market. sometimes the extra money is worth it if the horse means enough to you. if she is your one in a million then fight for her :)

hope things work out ok :)

I'd offer 3K and sort it out so you have cash in the bank to give to her tomorrow. Very few people can refuse an offer of cash tomorrow....then see what happens.

If shes got problems, you probably better getting a new saddle etc anyway.

Good luck! xxxxx

Yes, this is tricky if your YM is whacking up the price, as she knows your have her whatever.

Say to her, look I have done my homework. She is not worth 4k, she is this that and the other! Get the 3k out in cash and basically ask her for a yes or a no. Like the other poster said, it's very hard to refuse when you have the cash in your hand ready to hand over.... I would definitely give it a go anyhow.

For what it's worth, I shared a horse and was offered to buy it - by which I couldn't afford (wanted 4k - 6k which of course I did not have) and have regretted it eversince... So please think carefully.

x

Can only really ensorse what others have already said. I too would offer the £3K subject to vetting - and as Flamehead suggests, with the offer of cash payment.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

Lochpearl - I will get her vetted if YM accepts my offer. I want to get a vet in to give her the once over first, so I know that the problems she does have (bad back, whiteline disease etc) are all fixable, and shouldn't cause too many issues.
I know a vet can't guarantee it, but he would be able to give me an idea as to whether the problems she has now are going to cause issues in years to come.

Not sure if that makes any sense!!

If she is your dream horse then I'd fight for her, but be cheeky and offer her 2.5k...I would! I payed over the odds for Ted mind you because he is now priceless to me...if someone offered me 10 million for him I wouldnt sell him! x

If she's the one, I would fight for her!

Or at least not say goodbye before speaking to the vet & exhausting every option...

What FBT said x

Don't give up without a bloody good fight. Use all your skills of persuasion, sob story, anything. I take it you would keep her where she is so perhaps you can say they will be keeping a good livery.

Be truthful with them and say what you feel. Ask how they arrived at that figure, bearing in mind her problems.

I am keeping everything crossed your dreams come true. Chin up girl, all is not lost yet.

Good luck xxx

Oh, agree with this too. Archie was over priced, in my opinion, when I got him but to me he is worth his weight in gold. My head said walk away, my heart said go with your instincts, which I did and I have a wonderful horse for life.

Saying all of that, he didnt have any issues. What a decision you have to make.

AMum - I have thought about keeping her on working livery for a while, which means they have a good horse the students can use in lessons.

I am going to call vet today, put car on website for sale, and find out how much working livery will be at the yard.
I am going to try so hard to do this, and if at the end it doesn't work, and they don't acceot my offer, then so be it!!

Puppy - she is 5 years old, rising 6. Was back in the school and so has not done any competing (other than the few dressage comps I have done, which was nothing serious!!)

I would say she is an immature 5 yr old, as she has only done riding lessons with novice WTC riders, who don't know how to make a horse hold its self (if you catch my drift?)

ok, I was just thinking that it might be a better idea to get her vetted, get all the bad things brought up and then offer her what you are hoping to pay. Will she still be used in the RS if you buy her or would you move her/keep her on Full livery? IMO the YO is being unfair as the horse has been off work due to injury - which you know about and still asking for 4k. 2 things that are in her favour are 1 - she is coloured and 2 she's a mare which would bump the price up.

But saying that, if she is your dream horse I would probably find the extra money if the YO wont budge. Someone else will have the money and have no clue about the injury and problems she has and probably keep her on working livery so the YO gets the best of both worlds! Good luck, I really feel for you x

I have called local vet and they will charge £50 for a 1/2 hr exam, which is basically an MOT. It should bring up any issues and if I specify to the vet her back and feet etc, then hopefully he will be able to tell me if its worth going ahead with a vetting or not.
If I got her, she wouldn't be used for RS at all - she will be totally mine for keeps!
