I bought my horse a lovely, very expensive rambo stable rug. I put it on him last night for the first time and when I arrived at the yard this morning there was no sign of a rug, only a very pathetic looking shivering horse. I was a little confused and was ready to write a whinney message on the whiteboard asking whoever took it too return it. When I began to muck out his stable after turning him out I found said rug shoved under a bank. He has managed to wriggle his way out of it (all the fastenings where still done up) and he has also pooed and weed all over it (the majority of it is all over the lining) >:(

He is now going to wear a lightweight new zealand for a week while it's being cleaned ( It's the only stable rug I have bought for him so far all his other rugs are turnouts). I will have no sympathy for him if he gets cold as he brought it upon himself. If I am feeling nice I may buy him another stable rug- but not a rambo one in case he does it again!
 
Naughty beastie!

In the very old days of blankets under stable rugs my old lad removed his old army blanket and had a lovely time shredding it. There wasn't a single bit bigger my hand in his bed when I was mucking out!
 
He is very naughty.... He broke the fencing a month ago trying to get to the long grass on the other side of it so I have only just recovered from the cost of that!

atleast he didn't shred it :)
 
I brought my horse a new fleece a few weeks back and first night she had it on she ripped all the front of it. They're so ungrateful aren't they lol

I don't think he was too hot as he feels the cold easily, is clipped and it was quite cold around us. He was also shivering a fair bit so I don't think it's beacuse he was hot.
 
Was it windy in your area last night?

I love Horseware rugs, but they don't have any leg straps (many people like this ;) ). If it's very windy here, I can't use Horseware rugs because the horses put their bums to the wind and if the fillet string blows up over the horse's hindquarters, the rug then balloons with wind and goes straight over the horse's head. All straps still done up. I wouldn't have believed it until I saw a Rhino Wug blow off one of my horses when it was caught by a strong gust of wind.

Pink took a couple of weeks prefecting that art and eventually could get out of hers in just a light breeze :rolleyes: Then she discovered how to hook it onto a fence and pull it off. Legstraps scuppered her ;)
 
Genuine question, if they are spending so much time escaping from their rugs, do they need them?

I get that that if horses are clipped they will feel the cold, just wondering why they do it, too warm, too itchy, just uncomfortable?
 
My cob (who was stolen in may) used to destroy any rugs I put on him.One day I bought him a fly rug,ha lasted 2 days,it was very holey.As for turnout rugs,grrrrr forget that one.:(
Have new cobblet now and apparently hes another rug basher too :( so he wont be rugged.I would love to know how your horse got the rug off ?????

My beast wasn't hot, the blanket was over his stable/tackroom wall (ok ok, I know I shouldn't have left it there!).

sorry, im sure im being stupid faracat but wasn't the fillet string under the horse's tail to stop it being blown over its head?!

i do agree with you about leg straps though. i used to think they were a brilliant invention (being old enough to remember the old style NZ's we used to live in!) - until a friend's horse put its hoof through one when getting up from lying down in the field , got caught up and ended up with a broken leg.

now i take all leg straps off rugs.

It was under the tail to start with... the first gust of wind lifted fillet string up and over hindquarters, the second gust removed the whole rug.

ETA. The rug also had the loop under the tail flap that you put the tail through. All I can say is that legstrap free rugs don't stand up to the winds we have across the hillside. When the horses were in a more sheltered field, I didn't have the problem.

I do understand the concerns over legstraps, although there was a post on here recently where a horse broke it's leg (or possibly two legs) by getting caught up in the cross surcingles. I am totally paranoid about having every strap adjusted to the correct length.
