Horribly unscientific - but results of 'nail test'??? Sexing babbies..

If your horse is over 10 years old does he/she have a white patch on his/her back?

I know, I know, old wives tale.... BUT - who has tried and was it right? I had a go last night...

Well.....

Couple of aborted attempts where fatty wouldn't stand still and nail went all over the shop...

However got a definite swing on one go (while she was distracted with tea) and did it again to check...

And....

It was swinging in.....

A straight line up and down her spine - so nail says its a bubba boy!!! (did it twice just to check, both times the same)

And I really don't mind. I do like my mares and a third generation ginger mare would have been nice, but a colt would put some balance in the other three's lives, so healthy is first priority, then nice nature then pretty, before preferences for filly or colt.

Anyway, we have yet to see if its accurate!

Take a nail (as in metal thing for attaching shoes - not the manicure variety!) and tie it to either a tail hair - or in my case plaiting thread... and dangle it but keep it still - above the mares back where the baby is - ie loins.

If the nail starts to swing in a circular motion - filly, straight up and down the spine - colt. No movement - no foal in there.

Apparently something to do with the amniotic fluid making it move (as long as you can keep your hand still holding the thread!

done it on known non-pregnant mares and then compared with in foal mare and definitely no movement at all on the non-in-foal mares - so I think that bit is accurate

the bit about sexing the foal - mine came out as a filly so we'll know in April if it was right (hope so - then I can keep it instead of selling it)

I did it and it was right with our filly Legacy.

Did it with Breeze's mother too and first said she was a colt (but it was very windy LOL!!) but then later said a filly - she was a filly.

I thought it was all gobbledy-gook but on speaking to my highly intelligent husband, he says it all has to do with liquid and mass in the body .... or something like that.

You will love it regardless of spots

.

Don't forget we thought we had a ginger foal at birthing and look at the myriad of colours our Legacy has thrown at us over the past 7 months!

You are right, colt or filly is fine by me, and spots or no spots - it will still be a baby Asti and therefore much loved!

Though evil sister is muttering about getting a leopard spot, just so she gets revenge on me laughing at the state her pally gets into... on a regular basis...
