horse accident in Leeds today

It was a sad situation were we spent about an hour trying to get vet help for his horse.

Which vets were contacted and refused to help.

I think naming them here would be an excellent idea.

I think some of the comments on here are absolutely shocking.
Also absolutely shocking about the vets!
How do we not know that the pony is well looked after, or even a gypsy pony after all?
I hope the pony gets better!

In case I ever get parted from my horse whilst riding and he needs a vet asap he has a big tag on his saddle with all my emergency contact numbers inc. the vets and his vet name (i.e. stable name + my surname).

I think I saw this suggested on the YH forum years ago - Pets at Home will engrave a big tag with loads of info for about six quid I think.

************UPDATE**************
Have visited the horse this morning and pleasantly pleased how bright he is ... am amazed ...a really tough cookie.
His neck and shoulder is very sore but walked out nicely if a little stiff.
...I have heard from his owner and he is amazingly out of hospital but is now on crutches and very very sore. ... also a very tough cookie !!!

as for the charities and people supposedly there to help in this situation ... am getting fed up with answering machines even for numbers which are suppose to be emergency numbers... have spoken to the vets again this morning and pointed out about the BEVA scheme but they say they are not aware of it and they will look in to it ... so will continue to use my credit card ...until !!!!
The vets we are using is Minster ... do not know the other half dozen the police attempted to get out ....will find out ....

His owner sounds a lovely man and he is hugley grateful for the help we all gave xxx

What an awful thing to happen, hope owner and horse both make a full recovery.

Bless you Amazona for helping out (especially giving your credit card details), it's very worrying that the police were so unprepared to deal with this.

Thank goodness there are good souls who would help this poor cob. Amazona you should be applauded - I sincerely hope that BEVA come through and pay so you aren't out of pocket - but what a generous person you are to step up to the mark in a time of need.
I hope that your kindness is repaid.

Glad to read that both cob and man are doing well, I am sure he will be eternally grateful for you and for Minster Vets for helping.

Amazona, thanks for the update and I am so pleased both pony and owner appear to be recovering. I am shocked that Minster vets, as one of the largest vets in the Yorkshire area, were unwilling to come out and see to the pony, as an RTA victim, without your credit card details, that is not the way vets are supposed to work! I really hope that you are reimbursed by the owner tbh, if only to prove that certain posters on this thread were sooo wrong, but if not then that the BEVA scheme comes through for you. I hope that you will continue to update us on both pony and owner, they both sound very brave. I am sure that the owner will be relieved to know that his pony is being well cared for in what must have been a very distressing situation for all concerned.

Another one who should read the thread before commenting!

Accidents happen and both are lucky to not have more serious injuries. Well done to all involved for helping.

Not sure what you mean by that, what did my post say that got up your nose - perhaps you should have read my post properly!

Glad they both sound ok, I know that guy has been around for years, his horses are always well cared for. Our vets are in Boston spa and whilst I can't say if they would have come out (although I hope they would have) there are a couple of great horse vets there, we've had the same one for 20 years.

If you need any help with anything, let me know - might be able to offer some help etc, I'm not that far from where the scrap metal guy is, if it's the same one, which I accept it might not be! :)

So pleased the horse and owner are both doing well.
The most shocking thing is the moment 'driving cob' and 'traveller' are mentioned too many people jump on the band wagon as slag of the travellers.{dont get me wrong I have seen some terrible treatment on animals from some travellers, horses and dogs}
As the owner of a 'driving cob' I would hope the same asumptions are never made towards us if an accident was to happen.
If this had been a riding horse no-one would have said a bad word.

Well done for helping the pony, poor thing must have been terrified. Is the man who got run over not the owner? If so, he may want the pony back so he would be my first port of call and police/hospital will have his details. Sorry just read that owner/driver is very ill. Hope he makes a full recovery

Most charities are not there to help with RTAs, certainly not the smaller ones, thats for the police. I offered to try to help find an answer as I admired what you did and was concerned for the horse, plus I know people from previous dealings with strays, but I was not near my phone last night and had a hectic morning trying to sort out medication for poorly horses and set off to Manchester for a visit.

After speaking with people then it is my understanding that the horse should have been taken by the police to holding stables where it could then be treated by a vet there, it doesn't matter that it is technically not a stray as it was currently without an owner the police should have still done the same thing. I think training for individual police officers may be key after several of these incidents.

My vets were three vets down yesterday and struggling with their own callouts and emergencies so there may be other reasons for some vets not going out.

I am pleased that both horse and owner are recovering and thoroughly admire you for what you did.
