I have previously posted on here about this but things have moved further on now and any help or advice would be great

My horse is genarally sensitive and does have odd little lump ect.. and in summer he really reacts to fly bites

He has recently been come out in huge hives now if i give you a run down of events you may be able to he

couple of weeks My horse is lumpy bumpy itchie pissed off!!!!!!

day 1 Ok i used mane and tail day before NOW NOT USING

I posted on here and realised he was having too much protein in feed (alfa oil , copra meal , ready mash , sugar beet, veg oil) now not using

so i change to ready grass , sugar beet , Ride and relax , veg oil ( previously had ready grass and sugar beet and a basic feed no probs)

DAY 2-3 He getting worse and pissed off

DAY 4-6 Not looking to swollen but not happy off we trot to vets steriod injection , Given a wash to use and steriod cream .

Day 5-6 stayed in over weekend used brand new rugs lumps went down with injection he looked perfect and happy hooorayy!!!!! Lunged no probs

Day 7 am put him out in field with old rug washed 3 months ago at equine wsh place ( today the day steriod injections would start to wear off anyway)
pm looked alittle lumpy but might just be me thinking it
pm+ rode for 20 mins tails starts swishes he becomes uncomftable got off there back !!!

Day 8 am urned out in outdoor rug thats brand new never been washed anywhere has been worn few times still there not as raised he seems itchie
pm spoke to vet he said 2 options seriod injection (not going to cure only help) or 4-6 week oral steriod tablets again wont cure but could help until pollen or something chnages that we dont even know off

also there is a dermological test available but about £1000 and not proved to give you the answer

i can take everything away paperbedding bagged rye grass and take away hard feed everything introduce and see what comes back ..

Im thinking now all it could be is

a) vegetable oil
b) slight chance rugs but has had them on for 3 months since washed never been problem
c) most likely answer something in the field (also vet agrees with this )

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

haven't got the answer but i'm having the same problem..

lumps all over her body which just came up rather quickly, had vet out and she had an injection, plus wash and steroid cream.. noticed they have gone down a little and now bit dry. took all hers rugs off and changed her food, in case it was a protein build up and also a reaction to Alfalfa pellets. still there and due to them being in the saddle area, i have been unable to ride since beginning of December. she gets some in the summer due to fly bites and its normally on her face, first time its ever gone on her body.. i'm at a bit of loss as like you said the tests are costly and still might not get the exact cause.

really hoping with the change of weather they will soon go, with the help of a full clip and a really good scrub.

will be keeping an eye on this post

Have either of you tried a detox, NAF do one that I have used successfully on several lumpy, itchy horses it worked well, one had been on steroids with no real improvement, it cleared up with no further problems.

Just tracked some down at a local tack shop, just need to finish work and get there before it closes..

Thanks and sorry for taking over your thread :o

My mare used to get this problem and to be honest I never did find out the cause although I narrowed it down to either the type of bedding or the fact she was on semi deep litter.

A course of antihistamines used to sort it although since I moved off that particular yard (5 years ago) she's not had the lumps?

Very weird

On day 2 of Global herbs detox and have everything crossed i'll see results.. Have been thinking about her bedding as this year our straw has been dustier then normal and she is on Deep litter, she is out 24/7 at the moment and naked :o as suggested by my vet. So aiming when it starts to warm up giving her stable a full clear out and disinfect, then looking at either getting different straw in and not from the livery owner or putting her on shavings.
