Horse bitten tongue of

Poor thing! I cannot believe how much of his tongue actually came off! Glad it is healing well now though.
I was just reading through this thread and thinking 'I wonder if he now puts his tongue over his bit?' - and then comes your last post!
I hope you get everything sorted so you can go out XC training again soon!!!!

Poor pet glad to hear it is healing well and can eat or drink relatively normally.
I remember reading in H+H about a horse who was licking the ground in a horsewalker and stood on his tongue and cut it off. He healed well too but had to suck up his hard feed.

thats the only other one I have heard off. And funny enough a vet that came to our yard last week dealt with it

There was a horse at the yard where i used to go to and when a horse was outside his stable he would play with them with his tongue haning out!!! Well one day one of the ponies outside his stable bit the end of his tongue off and spat it accross the yard!!! :p
The vet came out and the horse was fine!

A horse belonging to a friend of mine had a horrific tongue injury several years back - they managed to salvage a lot of the tongue (they had to try because the damage was done so far back :( ).

It healed very well and actually the horse seemed quite happy for the the duration of the healing, learnt to cope very well. When she went back into work she had to start off with a hackamore - the scarring was right behind where the bit would sit. Luckily the horse went well in the bridle (not competing under BD rules tho!). She is now back in a normal bridle for most things, but will still go bitless if she is to be ridden for long periods of time.

The injury happened while she was tied up on the yard - she was quite quiet and we can only assume she was playing with her rope while my friend went to fetch something, caught her tongue in the twine, pulled back and... well - nearly pulled her poor tongue apart! Looks awful, but they are quite resourceful thank goodness!

Good luck, I hope she heals well and settles with a bitted bridle for you! :D

Ah bless him, that might of happened to mine as we are not 100% how it did

Your lad might just need more time and he'll eventually stop putting his tongue over the bit.
I 'd guess it's all still feeling very weird to him , a bit like us when we've had a tooth out and once its all settled down and feels more normal he'll stop playing around with the tongue he has left.
Fingers crossed hey, maybe bit less is the way to go whilst it completely heals up?
Good thing is mouth injuries to tend to heal quickly.

Thank you, good idea

Update, it must still be feeling weird to him he is different to ride cant explain it but he is, Im sure time will heal and he will be back to normal x

Ouch! That must of hurt.
There is a horse in my barn which has bitten the end of her tongue off, not sure when or how but I know she has no problems now and it hasn't affected her.

My horse bit a chunk of another horse's tongue off through the bars between their stable! we found the chunk of tongue sat between the bars! disgusting!

Was the other horse OK in the end? I had a lesson with my great instructor the weekend and he said he felt fine and the 3 weeks off had done him good and he felt really good, so hopefully dressage in two weeks x

I've just looked at your pictures, crikey a bit gruesome but I find these things kind of morbidly fascinating. Have you any idea what happened to make him do it?

Glad he's healing ok for you tho, can imagine it must have been quite a shock for you to find him like that. Good luck with the dressage!

We think they where just playing and he it bit it himself or the other one did.

Thank you

just to update you, his bit of missing tongue is not slowing him down at all,

He won Pairs X Country and came 6th in indivdual due to fact too fast should have been done in 384 he sped round in 270.

As parking is a problem sometimes do you think I would get away with a disabled parking badge LOL:D

just to update, done our first show minus bit of tongue, think his double felt strange as he was a bit resistant but got a 2nd x x very pleased

My dog injured his tongue the other day, lots of blood but did stop after a while. The vet said as long as it stopped bleeding not to worry and if i was worried it could be stitched but would require a GA. I decided not to do this and just gave him Manuka honey which he loved and would help with the healing. He now has a slightly forked tongue which does not worry him and has just made him unique. We believe he may have caught it on barbed wire but we will never know.
