I am clearing out stuff which needs a new home, everything from grazing muzzles still with the label on to second hand jods, everything in good condition but some older and well used.

How on earth to you price stuff? I’m looking at Bioflow boots, a lovely in hand bridle, Metalab stirrups, an Ideal Jessica, Kanteq body protector, Joules clothes etc etcand thinking “um, dunno where to start”. At the moment I’m washing everything or cleaning the tack and the event isn’t until next week.

Any advice welcome - obviously I know what stuff is advertised for on eBay and marketplace but if it sells is another matter.

I’ve also got loads of stuff and if I knew anyone who was struggling financially I would happily give away everything but the saddles, i have let it be known locally but no one seems to want secondhand stuff..I put prices when I put it all on east of England regional board but that was so I coould post stuff without asking for postage separately..maybe when everyone’s energy bills go up people might go for second hand, i will have to make more of an effort and put notices in local feed merchants etc

eBay has an option to show ‘sold’ listings which shows how much they made, and the date they sold. Scroll down, have a look at the last 3 or 4 and make an average from them and you won’t be far wrong.

Don't charge too much, people are looking for a bargain. If the table is £10.00 then when you have that you are into profit and you are getting rid of stuff. Give the tack a clean, often it looks as though it has never been cleaned and needs to go into the dustbin rather than offered for sale. At least give the rugs a good brush even if not cleaned.

Get some tags and label the size of stuff, and how much you want for it particularly rugs. Rugs from around £10.00 - £40 ish. Often people will just offer a sum and it is up to you whether to take it or not. Really good things will get sold, but people are going to be paying in cash, so they are not going to be paying out large sums, so if you want quite a lot for something then ebay is probably the best bet.

It is amazing what will sell.

I think you need to be prepared for people to haggle too, so you need an idea of the minimum that you'd be willing to drop items to. Also, when selling second-hand items (if you want them to go at that particular sale) it is more about what the item is worth to the buyer than what it's worth to you; I saw a Thermatex rug for sale for £95 at a horsey car boot sale a few years ago, but it was so full of large rat holes that it looked more like a string vest (it was unmendable unless you were prepared for it to be more patches than Thermatex). My friend commented on the price, and the seller said 'but it took me ages to save up to buy it new' which was rather beside the point considering the state of it!

If you have anything worth over £80-£100 you are probably better off trying to sell them via ebay to ensure you get a good price.

I hope it goes well, I love a good second-hand sale but haven't seen a horsey one locally for years.

I used to do a lot of these horsey sales, I bought up the stock from a closing tack shop and then sold it on. I found that the bulk of a day's sale would come from just one customer and then the rest was made up of little sales.
Think of the overall amount rather than the price of each item, when it comes down to it, it is the money you have in your cash box at the end of the day that matters.

I’m doing one next week too! I have bought tags and labels and plan to price everything before I go. I’m looking on ebay (completed listings) and also FB marketplace for an idea of prices. I will also factor in the effort I be saving in not having to post. I expect I will sell things too cheaply, but It’s one evening and I’d rather come back with as little as possible. When I did one a few years ago I sold all my old rugs and even ones that were damaged or not waterproof (and labelled as such) sold at £5 each.
A friend did it with me and didn’t sell much at all as her prices were too expensive imo.

I’m not sure whether I’ll take the saddle I have as I’m worried it might get damaged and I’d want about £400 for it.

Thanks everyone, I’m not expecting big bucks, I’ve priced a cleaned and reproofed Weatherbeeta full neck 6’3” at £15, nothing under £5, nothing over £25! Fingers crossed! Washing machine has been going all afternoon, now I need to clean the leather!
Cleaned and re-proofed I’d be tempted to ask £20 then you can always come down. My washing machine is currently going too. I think the head collars might have been a mistake, judging by the noise it’s making!

I have four hoof boots to wash, going to wait until tomorrow when husband is out!

Take some really good pics of the saddle and print some A4 posters out with the details and price on? If anyone’s interested, you can swap numbers. I brought a driving harness like that once at a car boot and picked it up next weekend.

I’d try the Joules stuff on Vinted - I’ve been really surprised with how quick and easy it is, and that sort of brand name tends to do well.

On the off chance that any of us are local (and therefore potential purchasers!) can those who've said they are off to a horsey car boot sale soon post when/where they are? As we are mostly fairly annonymous I presume it won't fall foul of the HHO advertising rules as long as you aren't actually running the sale.

there is one here on the 24th near Bovey Tracey in S Devon. I am not taking anything or even going so I cannot be accused of advertising I hope.

I went to one recently. I spent hours sorting it all out. I priced it as if I would buy it. Anything I was unsure of I looked at ebay prices. Disappointingly there were more sellers than buyers, though I did sell a few items.

Yes that is a concern, but it’s not a crazy amount of stuff and I’m resolved to numnahs being used as dog beds if they don’t sell!

Love a second hand horse gear sale, but I will only buy clean, quality well labelled goods. Doesnt have to be a bargain for me to buy it.

I want to know what size the item is and what price you are asking. I’m not going to haggle - if it’s clean and in working order for a legitimate price I’m buying.

Ive bought some stunning saddlery this way and much of it high end goods that are nicer than the mass produced rubbish available new in stores.

I donated a load of stuff to WHW's shop at Snetterton; it's a hassle-free way to get rid of things while supporting a good cause

I went to one near me recently and most of what was for sale was only fit to go on a bonfire unfortunately, the ones I have been to previously have been pretty good though and I have bought some pretty decent things over the years.

I priced to sell when I gave up and after a couple of weeks on FB selling sites/eBay I'd drop the price slightly as I just wanted it gone

I did a boot sale someone was running, got a few bits gone there but I'd say biggest successes were FB market place and eBay. I then managed to sell the last few items (mostly heavy weight rugs to a local rescue who then does auctions to sell them in a bulk bundle)

I could dig out my price list if it helps? Nothing was a "designer" brand mostly shires etc as I've kept my saddle pads. Not that I'll ever use them but for sentiment. So I priced at non designer prices

Everything was clean and id had the rugs freshly washed and reproofed as I was having to store it all in my house so no way was I having rugs stink out the place

Also re being clean, I thought it made them more appealing I'm still on the selling sites and see people advertising s*** covered rugs eg stable rugs, er no why would I buy that?! And then be the one to incur cleaning costs!

I took a couple of photos for each item and noted any defects then sent more photos to people if they requested them. It took about 2-3 months and I had over 60 individual items but everything went.

A few things I thought oh maybe I've priced them too low, but I cared more that they'd gone and weren't sat in my house. eBay I sent everything recorded delivery, as I wanted proof of postage, I did get 2 say something hadn't arrived and the fact I'd got tracking to show they'd signed for it instantly stopped that as I sent them screenshots of it. You just add the costs for postage when listing the item

FB market place did quite well but be prepared for time wasters. I did great business with my haynets at the bootfair as I'd do bundles for people

Also bundles seemed to work ok too e.g. a bundle of hi Viz, although I think most stuff went on its own bar the final lot, as then people could just have the items they needed

My parents aren't far from Bovey and I'll be visiting that day but don't think I can swerve a get-together with relatives visiting from abroad by heading for a car boot sale- I would definitely prefer it but it may not be worth the consequences :)

I hope you sell lots STR, and drive home with a much lighter car!
