Horse charity in trouble!

Sick old horses? Im sorry if this sounds harsh but possibly in these difficult economic times PTS would be a better option. To ask people to contribute getting on for £400,000 is totally unrealistic!

blimmy dont hold back on the compassion will you!

The threat of mass slaughter of these animals seems incredibly emotive. Other welfare organisations must have been brought in allready to help support the Horse Refuge if they are in fact evicted at the end of April to help re-distribute the horses to other organisations.

I'm sure that they must be following legal avenues as well. The council will be heavily involved at some level as well, as they simply can't be turfed out with 40 horses on to the street.

Im old enough to be a realist.

Well said S. It's no good having pink fluffy clouds these days, things are far too expensive so the money is far better going to necessary neglect and cruelty cases than tie-ing up thousands each year on old horses that will never improve IMO. If the old owners thought enough of their horses they would not have shirked their responsibilities instead of passing the problem to someone else.

Totally agree.

Website misleading/confusing as if you scroll down to the bottom of the page on the link, you will see they have already moved! Personally I would never again donate to a charity that isn't registered (and even some of those won't get a penny).

If they are not registered then they are not a charity. This means that the money you give them will be used to buy them a farm personally.

I too am a realist. I believe this thread was posted an another area, it was suggested then that these horses were not suitable for rehoming, even as companions. If this is the case, are these horses beyond helping?? If they can't have a companion home what is the difference between a new home and relocating with the 'charity'??

I also would never donate to a 'charity' if it wasn't registered as such.

This lady Sara took these horses on when she didn't know that she had a long-term home or funding secured to keep them in the future. So who exactly has put them in their current danger of being pts? I'm afraid I get really p'd off when private individuals "rescue" a heap of animals that they can't afford to keep, and then expect the public to bail them out, set them up on a nice place to keep them etc.

Gosh this is a difficult one innit. I think a lot of horse charities are gonna be struggling in the present climate, and will have to make difficult choices on maybe the PTS option on at least some of their inmates.

However, the Donkey Sanctuary are apparently thriving!!! They've got mega bucks - enough for the next 100 years apparently, all in trusts and legacies, and if they never got another penny, could go on quite happily for another 100 years. To be totally and brutally honest, now there's a situation where the PTS option could and should be applied. They've got so many donkeys they don't know what to do with them and the pastureland they've got is far too rich, so much so that some of them are developing laminitis. You won't get this info from their publicity material - I know coz someone that used to work there told me. But this is my rant ....... better shut my mouth!!!

This is not a charity, this is funding someone's lifestyle no matter how good their intentions

Charities have accountability and corporate governance, whilst this is emotive - would you give someone money to buy a property?

lol, don't hold back!! But well said!!!

think there's been a thread about this already... entitled 'give me all your money or i'll kill my horses' or something like that.

if this place is legit, they really should register as a charity... i would never donate to someone who wanted me to buy them a nice big house and land... i'm trying to pay off my own mortgage first before i start buying random strangers houses for them...

Just because a orginisation is registered as a charity doesnt mean all the monies donated go to the horses in their care.If you look at the charity commisions website and look up a particular charity by name or by their reg no.You can then see their annual accounts and notice that a lot of charities have a large wage bill, with some quite large individual salaries.
Have a look at some of the really large well known ones!
I agree that some of these "charities" seem little more than riding schools with horses that should have retired a long time ago.And some organisations seem to want a lot of money for an equine that may need a lot of expensive
long term care.

That's true. But at least you can look at their annual accounts and know that there has been some transparency about how it is spent, a board of trustees has had an oversight, and the accounts have been independently audited. Then you can make an educated decision about which charities to support.
