Horse does want his medicine!!

Foal has now decided he does'nt like food with medicine in it

Any tips on how to get it down him!! tried a syringe but it blocks!! someone suggested yoghurt

I used apple juice to help disguise the taste for my filly's meds. If he is acustomed to apple and or carrot I also cut them up really small so they can't be fished out of food easily and they help take the bad taste away. pepermint escence is also a good one...
 
the antibiotics usually dont taste bad - the problem is the bute. can you get Danilon which is tastless bute. Its a bit more expensive but far less hassle. If not, this is what i did with an old mare, before the days of Danilon.
I got a big syringe, cut part of the nozzle off (because like you said, it blocks), filed down any rough edges so it didnt hurt her. then I got a tin of treacle. I used to drop some into the syringe, and put some warm/hot water in the syringe from the tap, which melts the treacle (by the time you get it to the horse it has cooled a bit). then into the syringe went the bute. then I put the end in, covered the nozzle end with my finger and shook like crazy to mix it all up. then i kept shaking it whilst i took it out to her (otherwise the gritty powder just settled in the syringe), still shaking it whilst I went up to her, then stopped shaking it just as i stuck it in her mouth and squirted it into her mouth. then shoved her nose in a feed scoop of nuts to make sure it went down. if you put the nuts on the floor the medicine will all come out of her mouth, so keep her head up. i did this for years and it worked a treat. bit of a hoo haa, but it got it down her.

He has beet....I think he's had a couple of days of naff tasting food and he's decided to go on hunger strike..what p's me off is his mum is dying to eat it and has

soak 2 or 3 pony nuts in a little hot water and mix to form a paste, and the bute, and mix again. it should be a soft mixture. you might find that your foal will happily eat this,if not use a syringe to squirt it in the mouth. being a paste it wont block the syringe, but is thick enough not to dribble out of the mouth....
