Never thought anything of it until today.........

H does RDA during the week so always has a handler and a rider at all times, so is a complete angel......

BUT, when I mount him, as soon as my foot is in the stirrup he walks away. Never been a problem until today !!! I know he does it out of wanting to get on with riding, no pain etc. When I get on, i grab a clup of mane, so I know I am not causing him pain, and lower gently etc. ALWAYS use mounting block too

well today, not sure what happened but foot must not have been in stirrup properly, slipped down the mounting block, him on the other side, hitting my bum and arm on the way down, still had hold of horse sitting on floor with legs out, he then proceeded to be a little worried that I was on floor, stood on lower leg, thankfully not full weight and then proceeded to put ALL weight on big toe.

Got up and made him stand still and got on, made him stand until I was ready, after girth and stirrups done, normally do this on the go !!! took him for a short walk hack, as leg and toe was agony !!!!

I think I have found myself something to improve and work on !!!!

Ice on toe, kills, bruise on bum, arm and shin hurts but luckily not as bad as it could have been, considering the size of him.

xx

Know how it feels. mac did it to me once

It's bloody annoying when they do that, I used to give my horse a carrot just before I got on - he was to busy chopping on it to notice me climb aboard! cheating I suppose but hey no-ones perfect.

There's you're answer! You have taught him to walk off while you are still adjusting,he doesn't realise he's doing wrong.

Hope you are not to sore, but sounds like you have learnt a valuable lesson. Mine gets a polo once I'm on and have adjusted my girth, nothing like bribery to get them to stand still!!!

I get on facing the wrong way, making this kind of accident more likley so I won't put a foot in the stirrup until he stands completly still. I hate it when they walk off when you are half on. Hope your bruises go away soon!

You get on so you are sitting facing the tail!

Really? I've only just started riding - I thought that I had to use the tail like a rudder

Actually I meant that I stand facing the horse's head rather than its quarters when I go to put my foot in the stirrup

parsley I always mount facing the head this way you are guaranteed not to dig your horse in the ribs with your foot whilst you mount and therefore not giving them an aid to move forwards. Also if your horse does try to do a runner you are less likely to have had your foot caught in the stirrup and get dragged.

So personally the way you get on is probably best.
