horse homeopathy? :)

If homeopathy was based purely on placebo effect, then it wouldn't work on children and animals which it clearly does.

No it doesn't. That's the point. Show me proof of efficacy.

If you wish to continue using it then fine, but please don't accuse others of ignorance as you are very wrong with that assumption.

SarahRicoh - the liver has a tremendous ability to heal itself. For that reason unless a horse has severe or neurological signs I would never say its buggered as many will heal themselves given time and ideal diet/conditions.
However, as someone Seles pointed out milk thistle is not homeopathic. I do often suggest owners with horses suffering from liver damage to use milk thistle alongside any other medications necessary.

I am amazed how vitriolic some people can get about a subject they clearly know absolutely nothing about, this much is obvious from their comments. If homeopathy was based purely on placebo effect, then it wouldn't work on children and animals which it clearly does. .

Pot, kettle?!

It's not vitriol it's data based decision making!

THERE'S NO DATA TO SUPPORT IT!

. Surely the point is this: inform yourself (or appoint a professional homeopath)try it and if it works for you great, if it doesn't don't use it.

Why take the word of someone who is trying to sell you their product?! Surely it is better to inform oneself using the many trials investigating homeopathy conducted by individuals with nothing to gain from the sale of it!

btw, read the thread - the lack of evidence has been noted repeatedly - and the flaw in your "no placebo effect on kids and animals" has been discussed already

Have I missed anything?

I've not checked this thread for a while as I've been attaching some holographic performance enhancing technology discs with 1000 negative ions each, to my horses' headcollars. :) They will improve the horses' balance, strength, flexibility, energy, focus and help relieve joint and muscle pain, improve blood circulation, reduce swelling, alleviate stress and boost endurance.

Oh yeah.... and only £30 a pop.

;)

That is another great thread, isn't it :D

I love this.

Plus the Quackometer, which I'm sure was mentioned in the Feedback section of New Scientist once.

http://www.quackometer.net/?page=quackometer

I'm quite tempted to test Parelli's website with the Quackometer. ;)

Let's see how soon anyone claims this, eh?

http://sciencebasedpharmacy.wordpre...-1-million-if-you-can-prove-homeopathy-works/

My bet is that he will never have to pay out.

My favourite part of that page is the comments...

TO TEST PLEASE FOLLOW STRICTLY THE FOLLOWING PROCEEDURES :-
PERSON WHO IS DISEASED – SHOULD FIRST KEEP HIM FROM TOTAL ALCHOHAL FREE, NO SMOKING, NO ALCHOHOL DRINKS, LIMITED NON-VEG CONSUMPTION, NO COFFEE AND FIRST HE OR SHE SHOULD BE CLEANSED HIS/HER BODY FROM TOXIINES AND FEW MORE DESCIPLINARY MEASURES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED BEFORE ADMINISTERING HOMOEO MEDICINES.

So in order for homeopathy to work, we must first adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle. Only then can the magic water weave its wizardry.

But it works Alsiola, it works, I saw it work, my Dad got better! :D

I almost gave up using my current Vet practice when I realised they had a homeopathic vet. Then I heard what the others said about his medicine, and stayed. I figure the extortionate amount of profit he makes on his little phials of water keeps my bills for proper treatment for my animals down.

If you go to the Society of Homeopath's website and look up a document called 'pursuit of evidence' you will see how they react to this offer. It's very amusing and involves a direct correlation between homeopathy and swans   :D They believe we need a paradigm shift

I couldn't believe what you wrote so I looked it up and here it is

Seventeenth century Europeans only had access to white swans, so even a completely unbiased researcher would have had reason to conclude that all swans were white. When Europeans finally travelled to Australia, they discovered that it is not true that all swans are white. If someone had suggested in the 17th century that some swans might be black, this would have been dismissed as entirely fanciful; no one could have predicted that some swans are black.

Karl Popper, a leading influence in 20th-century philosophy of science, is most famous for his belief that theories can never be proven, however many pieces of evidence that we have to support them. Rather, they can only be disproven. It does not matter how many white swans we observe, we could never prove that all swans are white because we can never be sure that we have seen all swans. However the observation of just one black swan is enough to disprove the theory that all swans are white.

Hence ‘scientific proof’ is a misnomer and the best we can aim for are hypotheses that have not yet been refuted.

We are never going to be able to prove the efficacy of homeopathy through clinical studies. All we can do is add to the number of observations that support the theory that homeopathy has an effect over and above placebo. Even when we have a very large number of these positive trials, they will not constitute proof. Randi’s million dollars are safe.

"We are never going to be able to prove the efficacy of homeopathy through clinical studies."

Why not? Because it doesn't work when you study it clinically, it only works when it is not being done in a double blind trial?

On the swan issue I'll eat my hat if people who had seen a mutant white blackbird, albino mouse etc would have said that there were no black swans in the world.

I agree, however many sheep you throw off a cliff you will never prove that a sheep can't fly. But personally, it would only take me 10 sheep to be pretty sure I was right and so far we have had far, far more failed homeopathy trials than that.

Wow, you guys are still going. That is real dedication.

I had to leave to do some work as unfortunately the stuff we make has to go through a clinical trial starting next week  and things needed doing. Boo :(

I find placebo studies very interesting I must say (slightly off topic I know). The power of placebo is really quite amazing. I think I need some for my back ache! O no wait, that's what chiropractors are for isn't it?! ;) :p :D

I can't seem to quote it but about the homeopathic site 'argument' against trials cptrayes I would like to say:

On behalf of anyone who has ever taken a course in the philosophy of science, or read a book on the topic, or even made one neural connection about the ideas it raises...I want to kill myself. Just when you thought the homeopathy debate couldn't get any worse, there they go and surprise you. Popper is turning over in his grave!

Some of the placebo studies are fascinating - different coloured pills are more effective against different conditions, two pills are better than one, and injection works better than a pill - even though they're all just sugar :D
