My friend is looking for a new horse and I said I would help her. I know you guys love window-shopping/helping people out in their search so please help us!!

3-7 year old
14.3-16hh (nothing that is likely to grow bigger as yard won’t allow it)
Preferably bay!
Mare or gelding
No full TBs or heavy cobs (LW cobs are fine as are TB x)
Nothing unbacked but lightly backed is fine
Green is fine
Must be forward - she likes “spicy” horses without it being dangerous
To eventually event up to 100 and maybe Novice
Under mid 4 figs
Within 2 hours of Nottingham

She found one suitable but the dealer messed her around a lot so not even gone to see it

For the budget I would be looking at TB's. I've heard so many stories about so many horses breaking even at the early stage of life I have to admit that I'm less sure that TB's break more than other horses. A racehorse that has retired sound has at least been able to cope with tough work, which you have no guarantee with from a youngster.

A TB would tick every box just make sure you pick one with a spicy temperament - it's a misplaced assumption they're all wild. Mine's a dope on a rope.

Bad feet are fixable. They are more prone to breaking though. I went for one that had been off the track for a year and had been ridden by a teenager. So lots of blatting about. I worked on the basis that if he had stood up to that he was probably pretty tough!

was also going to say the "no TBs" line cuts a huge number of very suitable horses out of the search, and they are pretty good value.
i have one for sale and the number of wanted ads describing him that finish with "no TBs" is a bit sad, there are wild TBs, dopey TBs, fine TBs and more substantial ones, ones with great movement and others more economical, there is a lot of variety.

Okay I will report back to her to not disregard TBs. I did tell her that TBs can make great eventers/allrounders.

If anyone knows of a decent TB that fits the criteria, put it in this thread and I’ll send it to her!

I saw some nice TBs on a couple of the retraining place FB pages when I was looking. If she'll consider TBs she'll have a lot more scope at her budget

I agree with those saying to get something with the potential to event 100/novice for that budget is unfortunately going to be difficult right now, and she will need to either think outside the box or compromise on something.

TB but ticks all other boxes I think? : https://www.horsemart.co.uk/16-2hh-beautiful-bay-mare-eventer-prospect/Horses/647899

May not quite have the potential you want, but ticks all boxes and in budget (I think possibly underpriced, so is there a catch?) : https://www.horsemart.co.uk/fun-bubbly-allrounder-15-2hh/Horses/650063

Another TB, just backed but never raced if that helps: https://www.whickr.com/advert/88c7e96f-0921-49dd-903e-a13c58abeaad

Bit over budget, sounds like there may be some compromise on current condition: https://www.whickr.com/advert/e2373931-1795-4d01-b572-9c1fbebcbf63

There really isn't that much out there with the potential to event, and not a TB and backed for under £5000. So either your friend gets very lucky, or has to make a serious compromise, or goes down the TB route.

FWIW my farrier used to shoe racers in newmarket and he thinks their feet a fine if you are willing to commit to a shorter shoeing cycle and have a farrier who is used to shoeing TBs.
