Hi all,

My wonderful boy is having an op tomorrow. Its just been one thing after another in the year I have owned him but we'll get there in the end I'm sure!

What I wanted to know is has anyone had experience of schirrous cord? Basically a result of a botched gelding.
If so how long did they stay in for after the op and how long were they off work for?

Seriously starting to worry now as so many people have said its so dangerous for horses to have a general anaesthetic, but I keep telling myself he's young and fit so will be just fine.

Then there's the problem of his play mate! He hates being left and constantly box walks if in and whinnies and fence walks if out.

Many thanks in advance

good luck! No experience with that particular problem, but my horse has had two GAs in the last three years, and bounced back from both just fine - in fact after a week being pampered and treated like a king at the vet hospital he came out looking better than when he went in!

Fingers crossed for your horse. he'll be fine! :) x

Don't worry he'll be in safe hands- my little boy had to horsepital have a GA to be gelded 2 weeks ago, he was allowed home the day after, and although he had lost a little weight due to the GA - he bounced back so quickly, he was totally back to normal after he had been home for 3 days!, no complications or anything.

My other horse had to have an operation when he was 5 and he came back looking as well as when he went in, and again came back well from it with no probs.

Both horses went to Liphook and we had very good Vets there that did the ops on both occasions.

Where is your horse going?- I'm sure the staff and nurses will put you at ease whereever you are taking him. Good luck.

I worked in a horsepital in Newmarket for about a year. We had roughly 3 - 4 surgeries a day we never lost any from GA. If he is box walking a lot which i seriously doubt he will just after his op i imagine he would as he starts recovering if he does and they think it may be a problem they will send him home. Someone will do his treatments every few hours even through the night so he will be checked on very frequent. Im sure he will be fine he might even have a nice holiday!!

Thanks for you kind words. He's only going to the local vets practice as its not a specialist thing.
Its not him that box walks its my little section A who will be left all on his lonesome :)

Will keep my fingers crossed x

My 34yo had a GA last year when his vets removed a shattered splint bone: best sleep he'd ever had! Came home the next day and hasn't looked back.
