Our horse insurance premiums kept rising so when you have multiple horses you have to take this into consideration so we looked for a different company. We were with KBIS at the time & the premium was around £65-£70 per month. A friend had moved to ‘Horse Insurance’ & had made considerable claims & they’d paid out. I was sceptical as I think they were at one time called ‘Equine & Leisure’ who had a diabolical reputation some years ago. Anyway thought we’d give them a try & the premium was £19 per month so we paid very little & to be honest didn’t expect much.

About a month ago one of our horses had an issue with his lungs, vet examined him & decided he needed various medications & then he needed a nebuliser to administer these drugs deep into his lungs. I checked the price of the nebuliser & they were £779 on line (Gulp). Anyway our claim was submitted through our vets to the insurance company. There was a cock up at the vets & they sent the claim to the wrong insurance company, they sent it initially to KBIS. We had a reply from KBIS saying that we were not covered by them. They stated that they accepted that the nebuliser was the best way to administer the various drugs, they would have paid for the drugs but would not buy nor pay to rent a nebuliser. Remember this was KBIS? We spoke with’ Horse Insurance’ & they confirmed they will pay for the nebuliser & medication, they will continue to pay for medication for the next 365 days, however they will put an exclusion on his next renewal regarding his lungs which is what we expected anyway.

A lengthy post but I cannot voice my appreciation for the way the claim was dealt with & the treatment they paid for & all for £19 per month? We could have paid £60 per month more with KBIS & had to find £779 from our own pockets for the nebuliser.

Something for owners to consider?

I was with KBIS too and my premiums were going up and up each year to the point they wanted around £80 per month, I looked around and went with Animal Friends who the monthly payment to around £30. I have a claim going through now, so far they have been great.

my vets won't deal direct with E&L or any version of them, so I would have had to pay the bill direct and then claim it from insurance.
Last few claims that wouldn't have been too difficult but I have had one big one that I was very glad not to have to settle myself.
Good to hear you have had a good experience though.

I was with Pet Plan for many years and at one point was paying over £120 a month in premiums for 3 horses and 2 cats. I felt they treated me very badly when my mare had to go into hospital. They took ages about reviewing the claim and threw it out because they said it was linked to a pre-existing condition and even a letter from the vet did not sway them because although the written exclusion was for COPD specifically, it apparently applied to the whole respiratory system for any and all reasons and that was implied in the wording.

Since then, I've used E&L in its various guises- premium payment more or less halved. I admit I left PP in a fit of pique and I was really nervous about E&L but can honestly say in the last 6 years I've had no problems at all- decisions either way are made quickly and (so far) fairly, even when my claim hasn't been successful they've encouraged me to get my vet to help lift very old exclusions it's only my own laziness that has stopped me. My vets don't seem to have an issue getting payment from them, but I know they did have a terrible reputation at one point so maybe it just takes time for word to get out that for whatever reason they are a lot better now than they used to be.

I insure with horse insurance and yes it is E and L but I have had 7 claims in nearly 8 years and they have paid every single thing, no questions asked, they used to be very slow but they are much better now so for me the experience has been good, obviously my premiums have gone up but I have claimed.

I'm with Horse insurance. Was expecting it to be bad after what I've read on here when I made 2 claims but it couldn't have been simpler and has only gone up by a few quid.

I was with KBIS they wanted 150 a month for my horse so I chose to not insure him...best decision ever he has been fine but I know i am taking a risk but barley any of him was covered anymore. My other horse is insured with NFU
