Horse killed in car accident

The horse riders /owners worst nightmare thoughts with all concerned like to know updates on all concerned if anyone can thanks

So sad, the roads are getting more and more hazardous for riders. I know of a number of near misses in our area over the weekend and sadly most due to drivers seemingly wanting to deliberately scare the horses. They don't seem to realise the consequences of their actions, not saying that this is the drivers fault as don't know the details but my heart goes out to those involved.

Oh my word!!!! Thats awfull, I cant imagine how the rider feels thats if they know yet or even the driver of the car for that matter (thats unless they are one of these drivers who says horses shouldnt be on the road and is an animal lover).

My thoughts go out to them!

It is awfula nd something every rider dreads. Saying that though I was driving home from work the other night (so normal rush hour traffic) and as I neared home i saw a horse and rider riding down the opposite side of the road. Nothing wrong with that, yes it's a busy 'A' road but no reason why she shouldn't ride down it although I can't say i've ever seen anyone riding where she was. However, she was on a bay horse and was wearing a longish brown coat (same colour as the horse nearly). She practically blended in with the hedges especially considering how dark it is with the current miserable weather we're having.

I just thought how irresponsible she was and felt sorry for car drivers who would be coming behind her. A bit of high viz or even light clothing would have made her much more visible - she was an accident waiting to happen.

Oh how awful. My thoughts go out to all involved :(

This may seem an odd question to ask, but it mentioned they tethered the other horse at the scene (while rider went to hospital) Do you think it would have been there long? must have been quite distressed I would think.

Hope both riders are ok. Rest in Peace poor horse.

yes I noticed that I hope he was well looked after.. sorry to add.. roads are no longer safe places to ride and never ever will be... why risk it.. all that training, work and loss of a family member, just too much to lose, ..

So sad. I constantly fear this as 95% of drivers I have ever come across in my area just don't bat an eye lid and are the most obnoxious, arrogant a**holes I have ever come across when I am out riding.

Google map search the road in question and it would appear to be more of a country track - not a major road.

Unfortuately if a lot of us didn't ride on the roads at some point we wouldn't be able to leave the school / field. I live in the country but in order to get to the bridleways I have to go down the main village B road - no other options. :(

I googled the road too and it does appear to be a long single track. The sort you would find have national speed limit-never sure why??
I have to play slight devils advocate here, as sorry as I am for all involved my first thought was why go out at that time? Its Rush Hour.
I know most of us have no choice but to use roads but surely you try and make it as safe as possible? Hi-Viz, bright clothing, riding out during lightest part of day or when traffic is not at its heavisest?

Terrible - and to think i was getting bored of the school.

Ive specifically asked my instructor to let me know when she thinks me and my horse are ready to go out on the roads together, to think i was getting fed up of waiting.
This has reiterated the importance - if it takes 6 months i will not take my horse out (Im lucky, an experienced friend hacks him out in the meantime)

There's a couple of livery yards close by and one large yard, and other than that track, very little hacking. The only other road is a VERY busy road which leads from Market Harborough to Northampton, and is a busy commuter's road too.

The lanes are twisty and people drive down them far too fast at all times of day.

I used to keep a horse in great oxendon and ride down that road (heck, in those days bareback as the field was down there!)

My thoughts are with the owners and families.

Roads are dangerous nowadays, but sadly not everybody is in the position to keep away from them, I have a reasonable network of bridleways near me, but they also involve riding on A and B roads as well as beside a motorway.

I trust my horse implicitly, it is idiotic driving that scares me, and I find it is far worse on narrow country roads than the A road, which is very busy.

i cannot get to any decent hacking area without crossing one of 2 main leeds roads - this post has actually made me think twice about staying at my yard - trouble is its a wonderful yard - great yard owners, no bitchiness, lots of support

Please do not slag off these riders for going out in rush hour its normally quite quiet and they where coming back from there ride not just going out at that time as they try there best to avoid the traffic they are close friends of mine and are devasted at loosing there horse let alone her husband being in hospital. They where hiviz and very experienced horse people this was all witnessed by a local livery yard owner who see the whole thing who was then on scene to help thank god.

My friend would be pleased to know she has other people thinking of them at this horrible time.

I will update when i know how her husband is please keep everything crossed that he makes a speedy recovery.

God, i used to ride around Braybrook when i lived in Desborough (many years ago) and know the road they were on. It's so sad and it's such a lovely place to hack around as the views are amazing and the roads are normally so quiet.
Heart goes out to everyone involved.

I see from a later posting by someone who knows the riders involved in the accident, that they werre wearing Hi Viz, but I can relate to the above posting.

I was driving in Nottinghamshire near the AA college at Widmerpool, a good wide straight country road, with wide verges and gated entrances going up to large houses. I had good visability 300m+ I was driving at 50-60 on a totally deserted road, suddenly a pair of horses appeared out of a hedge lined drive that had completely concealed them, onto the verge, with no warning. They weren't in my direct path, they had emerged on my left, but I was concerned that I might spook the horses so manouvered onto the opposite carriageway and reduced my speed, rather than breaking sharply. I remember a very haughty look of disapproval from one of the riders, but it was only as I looked back at them in the mirror wondering where the hell they had come from, that I realised that the combination of Dark Bay horse, brown breeches and a russet coloured jacket (exactly the same shade as dead leaves) made her pretty much invisible, and her companion was almost the same, I very nearly stopped the car to go and point out what a perfect job of camouflage they had inadvertantly achieved, and that as a fellow rider that they should have more sense.

I know that it would have gone in one ear and out another..so saved my breath, but we really don't help ourselves at times do we!

Do you know if the tethered horse was recovered to a more appropriate "holding" place? :( I know your options are limited with two riders to get to hospital, but leaving a horse tethered is just asking for a second accident, IMO :(

RIP horse, hope riders are recovering well and that anybody in thei vehicle isn't too badly hurt either.
