My TB is turned out during the day on very good pasture(dairy cows in field). He comes in at night , gets Blue Chip Ballancer, Happy hoof and Alpha Beet, same in the morning before turn out. He is licking earth and taking great chuncks out, what can he be lacking?

What about a multi vitamin block? Or he's just getting trace elements out of the soil. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Other than when he goes to give you a sloppy muddy kiss. I've had quite a few horses which do this and there isn't anything untoward happening with them.

One of my geldings does it first thing as soon as he goes out - run around, roll, eat some soil, then graze for the rest of the day.... he is fed a carefully calculated diet, including a broad spectrum vit/mineral supplement, and has a salt lick, everything mentionned above - as someone said, its natural and just part of this horses routine! Could be worse - the other gelding eats ANYTHING, very partial to s*** and if you pick out his feet onto the floor he backs up and gobbles up what you scooped out ... he really is a horrid little boy!

mine are on topspec lite and were both doing this - rang topspec and was told that horses may be looking for something crunchy as grass so wet at mo ! also told as long as they have salt lick then not too worry !

Hi
Have you tried those licks - I can't remember their name but they come in plastic tubs - the one in the blue tub smells of treacle and they do a mobility one as well. Mine both love the one in the blue plastic tub which is the treacle one. Smells absolutely fab, but tastes nothing like it smells (yes I did try it).....
