Anyone remember those stories they used to run over the course of several issues - they were excellent!! I can still remember the style of illustrations that used to go with them. They were usually about some 'ghost horse' that had been spotted roaming the moors or something lol

Is it my old age showing or was H&P not as kiddie as it is now? I saw an issue a few years ago and it was so aimed at very young people. Back in the day I seem to remember it was more adult as they used to have the YRC section for kids?

Ooops, are we allowed to talk about this on here being a magazine and all?

I read it in the 90's and sodding loved it

was so gutted when it stopped

aww I remember reading that milton had died, and all the posters

was brill

its really kiddy now

ive compared it to my old issues and its awful

Ooh I'm in Derbyshire too, Chesterfield to be precise.

Did they stop doing it then?

Blimey the posters, I'd forgot about those! I used to have them covering all my walls and when my friends had Bros and Wham etc.

No way.....that's priceless!! I was actually in one of the magazines and I have that copy but the rest are long gone.

Lots of us had a share in Fred then

I got my picture and a write up in H&P and was so absolutely ridiculously excited - they sent me a pink H&P rosette, amongst other things, I still have the rossette

For those of you that have back issues, I reckon I was in there around 1988 in the "readers/Freddie's fan club/can't remember what it was called" pages - jumping my grey welshy Ceredig over a fence - I lived in Spain so that is mentioned too - left hand page of the double page spread LOL!

I think it was in it 1991 when I was in it? I won a competition to be Freddies groom for the day. I actually went and stayed with the family for the weekend which was sooooo exciting! Its the issue with John Leslie/Freddie on the front.

Yes!!! Started a subscription in 1984
I remember Freddie (what happened to him anyone?)
Chanceit the Editor's horse
And the Jessica & Sultan series/ diary column
The serialised stories were brilliant I loved them

Ohh that must have been fab!! I wasn't reading it then as I would have been 17, but I would have loved to meet Freddie!

BTW, have just had a thought and reckon it might have been 87 I was in, rather than 88 - oh someone pleeeeeeeeeeeese find me in H&P, I lost my copy years ago

I can remember one of the writers had a horse called The Artful Dodger (Artie for short) which I always thought was a fab name for a horse!

My son has it, but it's blatantly aimed at girls. It's now called PONY, has the same charlie's club (where you get a rosette and save coupons for more rosettes), photo stories, etc. It changed alot from the 80's to the 90's.

so if the editor of PONY magazine is on here: why is it aimed at girls only???

some of this country's best riders are male... you should be encouraging them not making the magazine PINK

Oooh I was in the YRC. I had the photo of Freddy and his rider, a rosette and a badge and all that stuff.

I also had a letter published

Horse and Pony was ace! And Freddie seemed such a cool pony

They had cool competitions and good articles about everything.
Cut out fact sheets, posters of all the horsey celebrities and "gossip"

Then it became H&P which was quite cool as I got older.
Then merged with Your Horse which was a bit rubbish cos I've never like that magazine

I read PONY for a while but they kept repeating stuff and I got bored.
I really liked the equine personality aspect of Horse and Pony, and it was so much fun

Nope, you are mistaken - H&P did not turn into PONY magazine - H&P is still going, albeit in a far poorer format

I remember waiting absolutely AGES for my YRC membership stuff to come. The last time I read it back in the 90's, Sarah was Fred's owner. I read Pony occasionally, but wasn't a great fan as it was decidedly dull.

I also remember Gallop! starting around the mid-nineties - what happened to that?

ahh, i remember H&P being really good, and picked up the two in a shop one day and thought Pony was better. H&P seems quite chavvy

cannot believe that that is the same mag I used to love years ago! Pony is definatly the more informative / less diamante of the two. Though as I understand H&P is endorsed by the pony club.

Hahahahahaa, yes, I was sooo excited when it finally came. I treasured all of it for years and years.

Does anyone else remember reading about Lesley Bayley (Not sure if that is the right name) and her horse Chance?

Ooh the name Lesley Bailey rings a bell.

Gallop.....yes I quite liked that one - it was really funky if I remeber??!!

I also collected a series of magazines, you know the ones that you have to 'collect' monthly. I think it was called Your Horse but I could be mistaken? It came with a brown folder to keep them in.
