Our old 29 year old horse was limping last Sunday, and we got the vet over. We live in the South of France so unfortunately Danilon is not available or known here. Our old horse is rather wary of vets and an injection was impossible. The vet prescribed Bute and antibiotics. He's a very suspicious Camargue and after managing to get a small amount into him by mixing it with honey and spreading it on bread we got a little into him. He went on strike and is now refusing it mixed with apple sauce, honey, hidden in carrots, in his barley etc etc. After 48 hours we're pretty desperate. He's refusing all treats even without anything mixed in. Luckily he has stopped limping. We are going to have to give up on all the medicine now. I read about Danilon being palatable even to picky eaters like him, but without a prescription it is unobtainable and the local vet has never heard of it. Anybody have any left over to mail to France?

Sorry to hear of your predicament.
Have you considered Vetrophen?
Maybe ask the same question in the Overseas section of this forum. Good luck.

I had to medicate a horse that refused anything- any painkillers at all, Just mixed it with apple juice and syringed it down his throat. Spat a fair bit out but he stopped limping while i was doing it so some must have gone down and worked

If only we could syringe him. He's a Camargue and lived in the wild till age 6, he does not accept that and it is not possible to force him.

Can your vet order Danilon from England and would it be possible to send it by post I can ask vet here if you want me to ,or get you a phone number for our local vet ,sure he will help if its possible .

Hi Shergar, that is so kind of you, thanks. The local vets have not heard of Danilon, it's not registered in France. Phone number of your local vet could be very helpful if all else fails, thanks.

I have looked on the net for a company named Hyperdrug .co . uk there is a equine pharmacy and they have danilon and send over seas, I hope this helps

Good gracious. I had to do this for my colickly horse who didn't feel like eating (but normally takes bute in food even when colicky!). Just dilute the powder with boiling hot water, wait until its cooled, give it a good shake, shove it into a syringe, get someone to pull out his tongue to the side of his mouth (so he can't shut his mouth) and syringe it down.

The horse is likely to be anxious of any kind of food you give him at the moment as he knows you have tried to 'trick him'.

Good luck :D

Thanks so much for all your help and advice. Trouble is Temps is an old Camargue who was wild for the first 6 years of his 28 year old life. Putting anything into his mouth he doesn't want, let alone pulling his tongue sideways is quite impossible. I can't order from the UK as I don't have a prescription. Just phoned our vet who prescribed the Bute, trouble is, they do not know Danilon here so he can't help. He was here last Sunday and didn't manage to give an injection to calm him as Temps was bucking and carrying on badly.
At the moment I'm emptying capsules of (for humans) vitamins and filling them with Bute, then hiding them individually in carrots.... full time job and if he bites through a capsule that will be the end of that.
I anybody wants to see him, look at the photo on the main page of my website (he's called Temps) at http://www.la-couscouillette.com
Once again, thanks for your help and advice!

Ask your vet to look into Danilon and ask HIM to find out if he can legally provide a prescription for it even though it is not available/licenced in France. Just because he has not heard if it does not mean he cannot check it out. Also, there are palatable alternatives. How about asking for Rimadyl. Different drug but comes in palatable granules and also an NSAID. There are other options.

Sorry to be negative but EU legislation only applies to drugs that are licensed in the local country. Sadly Danilon isn't licensed in France and you can't get it either here or over the internet. The only way would be to get a UK vet to prescribe it but they would have to see the horse first which kind of defeats the purpose.

Sorry OP that was no help whatsoever, best of luck with your boy.

Oh I love camargue horses he is lovely! I would also try no-bute or devil's claw (main ingredient in most Bute alternatives you get in horse shops and you will be able to get it online asap).

Gosh it sounds like you are going to quite some trouble with the vitamin capsules, I hope you can find something that works!

Here's a few tricks that worked for my old boy when he decided he'd rather not have his medicine.

Tip no 1 if try mixing copious amounts of custard powder into feed, it's a tip a drug rep passed on to my vet and had more success with that than any other feed additive.

My last resort was add a small amount of freshly boiled water to a teaspoon of honey, mix, add bute (this was for around a sachet so a bigger amount may require more honey and water), mix and draw up into dosing syringe. (another way to do it is to take plunger out of syringe, tip bute in and then draw up mixture). Give it a bit of a swirl and then syringe it in as you would a wormer. Not perfect but used to get the majority of it down his neck when he wouldn't take it any other way.

hi do you have access to marmite or vegimite? trust me they hide the taste of anything. try a couple of feeds adding this without the drug and then sneak it in:)

Here are some ways for them to eat bute (not saying any will work but might help)

failing that try no bute

I must thank everybody for their advice and help! I am getting the Bute into Temps with the empty vitamin capsules hidden in a carrot. Quite a job but it's working and he's limping less.
Also managed to get a prescription and order the Danilon over the Internet, so in a few days I'll have that arriving.

Thanks again, your advice was very supportive and it's so nice to know people care.
Thanks again!!

Just a thought - ask your vet if Metacam is licensed in France, it's very palatable and you can just squirt it on some food for your horse. I can't get bute into my shetland, and he won't eat Danilon in his food, he's only 36" high but can rear and bronk like a devil :D but he will just eat Metacam.

Hope the Danilon works when it arrives.
