There's a woman in our area who makes big of the fact that she rescues unwanted horses who otherwise will be PTS. She has about 8 at the moment. Anyway, my friend has had a Section A off her as a companion for her own horse. The poor creature is the most neglected looking thing I've ever seen, you can visibly count his ribs, and my friend got the vet out. Vet said his mouth was horrific and hence why he was so emaciated.

Yesterday, EDT came and the poor creature! His mouth was just foul. He had four teeth removed - you cannot believe the stench from the decay - lots of hooks and ramps filed, and he needs another 4 out but obviously it was all too much for him in one session.

He'd been at his previous "rescue" home for a year - what kind of a rescue was that????? It's all very well throwing him into a field and throwing him hay, none of which he can actually properly eat, but frankly he's gone from one poor home to another! And this woman has the audacity to criticise just about every horse owner in the area (me included, for overworking my PRE who is ridden 5 days a week and still has a belly!!) - even though they are all actually very caring owners with good looking and well kept horses.

I'm afraid I see it as pure self indulgence, some of these so - called rescuers, because it makes them feel good even though they're not doing the job properly. Sorry - rant over!

Don't apologise! It's true!

I met one of these 'rescuers' a couple of years ago, told me she had 18 'rescued' horses and her equine knowledge was scant, to say the least.

I too have had experience of such a "rescue" centre. The lady I'm talking about was one of the most lazy and manupulative people i have ever met! I was completely taken advantage of when I offered my help and am glad my name is no longer associated with this "organisation' or thsi woman. Her own horse was morbidly obese, itchy due to lack of grooming and scared of its own shadow (this problem improved with regular handling but the owner would rather have stood and smoked or inteferred with someone else's business). She also "rescued" a horse who would have been retired as a field ornament....the horse was put in a field with too much grass, was poo picked once (it was me who did it!), not touched and was on its own. I've since heard it had to be moved from that field due to lammi.

Jeeve, I know you're right as there are good rescuers out there and I totally admire those that really DO look after these unwanted and neglected horses properly. But it's just too darned easy, because you've got access to a couple of fields, to start filling them up with unwanted animals who then end up looking equally sad just in different surroundings. Being able to offer grass to a horse isn't rescuing it is it? Funny how it's always these "rescuers" who have so much to say to the flaming rest of us about how we're going wrong as well!

I am a rescuer and totally agree with this post. It takes a lot of hard work, commitment and money to rescue a horse and should never be done lightly. This woman is obviously in it for the 'feel good' quality and doesnt have a clue what she is doing. Its people like her who give the real rescuers a bad name. :(

I'm so glad that I haven't offended you Archina, and that you see where I'm coming from. By the sounds of it you're one of the dedicated rescuers, who clearly understand what's required and for that I truly take my hat off to you.
