Horse riding is easy you just sit there

Apparently, it's what Carl Hester does, according to a friend at work! I pointed out that they don't show on the telly all the years he spent teaching his horse to read his mind...
 
Haha ! Lucky you I'm sure I could prove them wrong by watching me ride haha ;-) or the good old "it's not a sport why is it at the Olympics" and throwing a pointy stick is ?
 
grrr, it annoys me when someone says that. i usually reply by saying ''if its that easy then try making half a ton of an animal do something that it doesnt want to do :)''
another one that bugs me is when they say that riding is not a sport (usually also followed by ''you just sit there and the horse does all the running around'' ) :rolleyes:
 
It's always people with no experience normally :-) does make me giggle stick em' on an ex racer and have a few other horses gallop past see how long they sit there :p we are cruel or is it just me ;)
 
When I was being bullied in school by a group of girls due to my love of horses and horse riding, this was a phrase that was often used against me! And it's not 'proper exercise' because the horse does it all!

It's not even worth trying to explain to people like that...just funnier to imagine how they'd cope if you handed them a horse and told them to have a go!

Conversely, a friend of mine who is a paragliding instructor once told me he had utmost respect for me and the extreme sport of horse riding that I do! Apparently he views it as much more dangerous than paragliding, because you're riding an animal with a mind of its own ;)
 
To be fair I'd say It is dam dangerous ! Your sorting on something that cannot fully communicate with and is a prey animal so likely to run :p wouldn't change them for the world ;) apart from being house pets would love to snuggle or hairy cob this time of the year :p

Yea my dad and brother are both people who say this regularly. They used to support me when I did PPC so they KNOW its not true, but they say it to wind me up anyway.

These days I generally say "Fancy getting on Alfie then?" to which the reply is invariably, "Noooooo no. Not a chance, that thing's got a mind of its own and no brakes".
 
But it is really easy isn't it, we do just sit there... trouble is 'there' has the ability to move to 'here' - which might be 10ft away in a fraction of a second :p

I had a PE teacher who used to say this all the time. Fortunately in year 11 we went on an expedition trip for a weekend, about 3 hours of which was spent pony trekking. At our request the instructor put her on a particularly broad cob and she didn't ever knock us for riding after that, but she did walk a bit funny for a few days much to our amusement.
 
On Blobby, I could just sit there. He was epic!

Though, an ex of mine kept bragging he wasn't afraid of horses and riding looked easy. I took him into Ziggy and Ned's pen...he pooped himself!! He didn't even have to get on!
 
My boyfriend said this, so offered to let him have a go on my friends rather sharp mare, said I'd have a go first.

Then proceeded to tell him what she did to her friend who said she could ride and obviously couldn't. Let's just say a trip to a & e and a broken arm later.

Let's just say he rather unpolitely declined my offer.

He's even declined to ride mine, who is rather sane, and a little bit bone idle... He backed out at the last minute thanks to a rather uncharacteristic energetic moment in a very large open field. He only wanted a proper run... :rolleyes:

Go figure.
 
I just laugh when.people say this but it really does drive me up the walls. I'm controlling a animal that is half a ton and could kill me if it wanted to. and you say I just have to sit there and it does all the work. it's not a mind reader that will do what I want to do by just thinking! I have to work extremely hard to motivate the horse into doing something that is natural to them. and when people say it's not a sport if you look it up certain equestrian sports are classes as a extreme sports as your putting yourself at high risk it's also a talent as not everyone could do it. most people who say things lie this have never experienced not only the hard woke that's is put in but the peace and tranquility from being up on the horses back.
 
My GP said I should take some exercise! I said I ride up to 6 times a week - she replied "No, proper exercise!" :p

I thought the definition of exercise was something that raises your breathing and heart rate for a sustained period?

She should come and join our Sunday lesson! We are like a load of puffing beetroots by the end of it (some very fit ladies in there, as well!!)

My OH used to think that we 'just sit there' - until he started coming to watch! :D

I do lots of different sports, riding works totally different muscles in most cases and there is a finesse and control to making it look effortless and easy a bit like ballet, the stamina and motivation for XC/racing/endurance and bravery and skill to through yourself over fences or just get on the crazy beast :p
 
To be fair, there are plenty of times when I'm hacking BH that I am just sitting there. He's a good lad and anyone can sit on him and go for a walk :)

ETS: and really, me going for a plod round the block isn't proper exercise. I used to be a sporty young thing and would regularly make my self physically sick through exertion running or in fitness training. I've never, ever managed that riding. Thank goodness. A mane full of vom would be a nightmare to clear up!
 
My friend had a few lessons and said it was easy. Stuck him on my horse and he got rodeoed round the school and ditched into a fence. Cut all his arm up. He said he hadnt been so scared and def wasnt in control or easy. He hadnt been on a horse since!
 
My SIL was a tall slim national level skier in a country good at those winter sports , she was staying and said she would like to try .
She is tall slim athletic figure to die for I am not tall and well unless I work at it inclined to be dumpy but I am well trained she had watched me schooling my horses that morning this some time ago when I was doing stuff and had horses doing exciting things .
One of OH's hunters was suitable for lunging so I got her on board and set to of course it's hard to do and she quickly worked out that sitting still on a trotting horse is not as easy as it looked ( ok I was having just a little fun with her , just a little ) I gave her an intensive half hour at the end of which she looked at me in amazement and said that was really really difficult , was it I answered innocently .
Although I have to say she would have learnt it easy peasy.
 
My OH always said this and 'Why do you have lessons still?'
About 2 or 3 years ago,I led him, in walk, a couple of times around the school on my (pre-tired out by me!) horse (OH slouched like some half drunk cowboy;) ) 'Ok' he says,after two walk circuits,'Let's go faster! What is it next? Trot?' 'Ok',I reply,advise him what to do in trot & I lead horse down long side in trot,for,ooh..two strides...'Ok!Stop!Stop!Stop!' he shouts..'That's enough...my nuts are killing.' He walks a few more strides,then gets off and pronounces, 'Right. Well...there's definitely a lot more to it than it looks..'
He has declined any offer to repeat the experience since...;)
 
Yeah Right. There is no printable answer to this one. I suppose they will be telling us next that when we come of a horse, we are having a nice lie down. God some people.:)
 
I always remember a school trip to a local riding school, like an activity day and a group of us had chosen to go riding instead of paintballing or to a theme park. Before we went out on our trek around the countryside, the yard owner had all the people in the outdoor arena to see what sort of level people were at. We all walked around in single file - no problem.

Then she asked us to do rising trot. It wasn't until I'd caught up with the horse at the back of the line and looked behind me that I realised I was the only person who was able to trot. The others all looked at me like I'd just cleared a fence in the National on a Shetland! We then proceeded to spend about half an hour trying to copy my 'up down' action, with my Biology teacher shouting instructions from the sidelines! So I guess, if you're able to do it, to someone on the ground horse riding probably does look easy. It's only when they have a go themselves that they realise how hard it is!
