Horse shopping frustrations and a 'has anyone' questions...

I feel your pain. I had approx 5k budget and was starting to pull my hair out. I wanted a similar thing to you, and just kept finding lots of horses over here were over priced for what they were. Also nothing particularly grabbed my attention. Maybe i was naive, but I didn't think it would be impossible to find a nice 16-17h gelding within the same age range, capable of doing the same thing for that price. Even contemplated giving up at one point and trying to find something on loan.

In the end I went over to Ireland. I had never done it before so was a complete novice- didn't really know what to expect. I received lots of great advice and contacts from many people on here and flew over. I went to both agents and private. In the end I have found what I was looking for, for hugely less than my budget. Yes he is green, and yes unpolished and needs his vaccinations/feet/teeth doing but he has such potential that Im over the moon. As he is less then id budgeted, after a couple of months riding away and getting to know him, he will be going off to a pro eventer friend to further his education, something which I can afford to double the time Id initially allowed as he was so under budget.

Pm me if you want any details/numbers of people as id be happy to help.

Totally agree with Stencilface's comments; jumping 1m10 courses is within reach of a huge amount of horses - you don't need to go out looking for the next superstar. I have never struggled to find horses for this purpose for my theoretical budget; which is less than £1k; but I am prepared to buy things that are going to take a bit of work. But all horses take a bit of work, so I don't see it as a problem!

Don't look for 'wow' factor or presence or looking in prime condition - be prepared to look at some raw examples and use your imagination as to how they will look 6 months down the line - if the basics are there, 3 nice paces, a willing temperament and a good basic jumping technique, that is all you need :)

My tick list buying horses is now 1. is it sound? and 2. does it jump? everything else is immaterial to me!!
