Horse size and rug size

Captain - 17-3 hh Gelderlander is in a 7ft rug, we use either MT or the Weatherbeta freestyle 'cos of his movement.

Fany 14-2hh Ardennes is in 6ft rug, very short lengthwise, very round so needs the width, actually they fit all right! She is very rarely rugged out at present unrugged, meanie aren't I?

Handy is a 17hand TB, he has a large frame (quite long too.) I find 7'0'' fit but some 6'9' rugs fit him lovely. Depends on make.

Little stig is a whopping 36 inches and in a 4' rug
Ollie (16 month NFxCob) is currenty in a 5'3 and 13.1hh
Ginger Ninja is 15.2hh and in a 6'6
Sassy is 16hh and in a 6'3

Both mine 16hh2 and both in 6'3". Indoor rugs that is plenty, it keeps the pressure off their withers. There full neck heavy weight NZ are 6'6".

I think rugs that are too big are more uncomfortable for horses than ones that are too small.

15 hands Appaloosa x Cob - very wide shoulders and chest: 6ft3
15.3 hands ISH - quite short: 6ft
11.2 hands Welsh Mountain pony - she has quite long legs for her size: 4ft9

I currently have a 16hh American TB, fairly chunky for a TB- he is in 6'3s or occasionally 6'6
Before that I had a quite 'little' 15.2hh TB who had 6'
Before that I had a very compact/shortbacked ISH who was 17hh and had 6'6s or 6'3s

Well, that is all very interesting - but ultimately not very helpful! ;)

I have to get a HW turnout for Hugo before he arrives and I won't be able to actually measure him before-hand. His (helpful - not) owner has said 6'3 or 6'6. She's not letting me have any of his current rugs, either! (or girth or stirrup leathers, for heaven's sake!!) My friend may well have a 6'3 I can buy off her but I'm not sure that it's going to be the real heavy HW he'll need in this weather.

So, if you were going to buy one rug, and one only at this time of year (only -7 round here!:eek:), which would you get? I am willing to spend a fair amount for one that will last well, but not a mental amount! He's 15hh2, cob (but not a real chunky cob, sort of medium-ish sized) and he's going to be out 24/7.

Nightmare - ideally buy both sizes and take the one that doesn't fit back!
