My big stupid TB has slipped over in the field during a thunder storm on the greasy surface. I gave him a good once over (just qualified as human physio). His back is sore so massaged it and released a few knots and in his shoulder, and some gentle stretches which he enjoyed.
I have kept him in today and overnight, and put some ice cool gel on him in his sore places.
He is about 5/10ths lame in trot but not too bad in walk tonight. I am thinking of keeping him in for another few days until less lame as he does hoon around. I will just walk him out on yard for a few times rather than turn out in field.
What would you do? In or out?

Thanks

If he is stiff and sore I would turn him out, keeping them in just makes them worse in my experience.

Maybe give him a couple of days and get a physio/chiro out to see him?

I would turn him out too to be honest, having him in will only make him more stiff and sore, that's at least if you think it is just muscular and nothing worse anyway.

Going to go against the majority here...:o if this was my horse, I'd rather keep her in for a day or two and walk her to keep her moving, as I know she'd throw herself round the field like a lunatic and probably do herself more damage!!

Personally, if there was nothing too obviously worrying. I'm a believer in turning them out. I know when I've pulled something myself it always feels worse if I sit around and do nothing. I think allowing the horse to move around outside in the field helps ease things usually.

If i felt it wasnt to serious, id turn out into a smaller electric fenced area in his usual paddock and in at night . i think stuck in a box all day isnt good if you can get them moving to help keep oedema and stiffness at bay. That and good old cold hosing sore legs, arnica pills for bruising and ruta grav for muscle and ligament damage, youre lucky you can also massage his back, i need to use my massage pad, and if you can get your hands on a magnet rug and boots get them on as well as theyre fab.
Hope he gets better soon

Thanks guys. He had 1 day and night in went out today and tanked round like a loon until he tried to turn and then went "ow that hurt" and walked off steadily.
I am happy its not serious, he is now going out in the day and in for a few nights for a few days and having a week off work. Planning to get chiro out early next week. He has got magnets on his back for an hour a day also! His leg isnt too bad now and he is sound in walk just not over tracking quite as much as normal. In trot he is now only about 3/10ths and is going on a high dose of calmer!
He wanted to come in tonight so i think he is happy to be able to lie in comfort as he doesnt usually want to come in especially after a short time out.

My boy did a wonderful skid sideways on his flank on ice/snow last year. No obvious sign of anything seriuosly wrong and left him out as best to walk off any stiffness.

Not the same as this time of year but feel same principles apply.
