I can't for the life of me remember where I saw the for sale ad, but the details have stuck in my head and puzzled me for the past couple of days. I think the horse was a mare and the ad mentioned that she made a funny noise that sounds like a quack. The horse doesn't do it when ridden and I think the ad said that a vet had investigated the 'problem', but couldn't find anything untoward (not even a quack remedy:-)).

I've heard of a condition called 'thumps' and wondered if that could be the noise, but I've no knowledge of thumps or how it sounds, so am none the wiser.

No reason for my asking, I'm just curious, but it was such an unusual thing and I wondered if anyone could shed light on it? I did wonder if the quack was just hiccups?

Some Haflingers "Quack". We had one a PC camp for a couple of years which is when I found out about it. It has to do with the structure of the mouth in that particular breed and they make the noise by fidgeting their lips over their teeth making a sounds which is sort of a cross between a squeak and a quack noise. They seem to do it just for amusement - and certainly the one I knew only did it when there wasn't a bit in her mouth. I don't know if other breeds do it as well or if it really is just a haflinger thing.

We had a Dales at the riding school that squealed whenever he cantered. You could hear him at the back of the ride "wheeeee, wheeee, wheee". It used to put some people off riding him, but others just laughed along. He was a character.

Ohhh, we have a quacker at work!!!

A girl who is full time told me and I thought she was mental until I heard it. He does it in his box and we think its a kind of teethgrinding/windsucky but not on anything type thing. Its totally bizarre but does sound exactly like a duck quacking.

probably a totally different thing but he had many fans because of his quack and I got excited at the title of your thread ;)

We have one on our yard who does this - in fact he lives next door to my boy. He is an ex-racer, who doesn't do a lot due to various ailments and I think is bored out of his tiny mind, so he quacks, weaves, headshakes and boxwalks when he is in (about two thirds of the time. And if he is in when we do anything with our two he does canter pirouettes at he back of the stable and squeals. It's very sad.

Poor horse Nessa...

A lot of horses will learn to do weird quacking-type sounds with their mouths. It's not related to thumps which isn't a sound produced in the mouth.
