Took him out for a hack tonight with my friend and her (luckily) bombproof cob. Went down the farm track that we have permission to ride down, on this track is a house and they have three horses, one of which is skewbald. I'm certain he's seen this horse before (they've not been there long) but from about 1/4 mile away he kept stopping and looking at it. The nearer he got the more worried he became, eventually he started broncing and whipped round and tried to head home, luckily I stopped him!! My friend had to grab his reins and pony him off her horse. He calmed down a bit then but all the way past he was on edge, head up, increased resp rate etc. Once we'd gone almost past he twigged I think that it was a horse and calmed right down.

He was genuinly scared, he wasn't being naughty!! Surely though he'd be able to tell it was a horse, even a funny coloured one (to him) so why the extreme reaction.

He is a bit special, bless him xx

Horses is weird. :D
was it really sunny, with the sun in front of you? that might have impared his vision a bit so that ,as the horse was brown and white, it acted a bit like camo, either so the white bits disapeared or were gleary. Just thinking aloud, but could be something like that.

Hmm, horses are funny things. I imagine he was just having one of those days. My pony was put in the stable tonight to keep my sister's horses company whilst he's on box rest - my pony poo'ed and then went all weird, sniffing at his poo, then proceeded to eat it! I have had him 17 years and never seen him do that!!! Honestly, horses - weird!!! Lol

Wasn't sunny. He is a 16.3hh shire x and a big baby with it!

Aah
A few years ago there was a wedding carriage outside the church , i drove the shire past it about twice no problem.
Just as i had unharnessed him in the field, the carriage drove past, and he went stupid, as if some monster was about to roar up and eat him, weirdooo!

My boys a shire cross too and hes exactly the same. I can feel his heart thumping when he goes off on one, always at the most stupid things. My friend says Shires are reknown for it

That's really interesting Louby! If he gets frightened in the field when we're poo picking he'll run over and stand behind us!! He is lovely though, can be very infuriating sometimes!! What's yours crossed with? Ours is shire x cob xx

Dad was 3/4 TB x ID, Mum 1/2 shire 1/2 tb. Ive never owned a horse like him. He is sooooo quirky but so talented and clever, too clever for me
Ive had him 8 yrs, shed many tears but couldnt part with him :).
I was convinced he had something wrong with his sight, so got his eyes checked but they were fine. Vet said his problem is they are too good :D

I'd agree with the mistaken identity for a cow. My mare is the same there are is a field of coloured horse at the top of the lane and we silly spooking and 100mph walking with our head in the air when she spots them.
