Horse wormer to become POM

It’s Ireland but I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes in in the UK too. We are on a veterinary worming programme so for us it wouldn’t make a lot of difference as the vet does the worm counts so would just do the prescriptions too I guess.

It’s probably what they are aiming for to move to this type of surveillance and treat if needed rather than the older style of worming, to prevent resistance etc

People will just stop worming :(
Yes, I agree. Also how are we supposed to prove we need the prescription? I'm imagining taking a pile of poo into the vet's office* 😆 (I don't always use my vet to do worm counts, sometimes I send it off).

*Realistically I suppose we'd have to send the lab report to the vet? Yet another massive faff.

I did wonder if that was the route they were thinking of going down when I read it.

If you’re with someone like Westgate you can just forward the email they send you with the result, it’s actually quite straightforward if you are on a plan or buy ad hoc wormers from poo post Westgate etc. saves worming when you don’t need to, I don’t think it’s a bad thing apart from the extra prescription cost! You’d only need to pay though if there was actually a worm issue and most plans include re-testing post treatment. I wonder how much vets are going to charge for this, be interesting to find out!

It's already this way in Denmark and some vets refuse to give the wormer unless you pay for the poop to be analysed.
Can't even buy cat and dog wormer without going through a Vet here, it's very annoying and expensive.
