I've just had a quote for horsebox insurance and, during the discussion, it came up that the insurance is only valid while the box is being used as a horsebox. So, if I used the van to lug heavy stuff to the tip or to move house, the insurance wouldn't be valid.

Is this normal? If it is normal, are people aware? Because I know quite a few people who've used their horseboxes while moving house, and I strongly suspect they wouldn't have done if they'd known they weren't insured.

that seems weird. Who are you with?
I've got my policy to hand as I've just made a change to it. it specifies I'm not covered for commuting in it but social, domestic and pleasure are covered like any normal car policy. Hire & reward are excluded as are races etc :p

thanks for making me look through it though because I've just realised I forgot to tell them I had my HGV licence now so can drive the big truck!

The quote was from Shearwater and the insurance provider was MS Amlin.

Interestingly, they also said the policy didn't cover me for going to Ireland, but looking through the small print, it does. I think I may have just got a numpty adviser!

Just reading your post which is interesting. My horsebox is insured with MS Amlin through Shearwater and I am having a terrible time getting our money back when our horsebox was written off by a tree falling on it in the first storm. Its market value at the time of the incident was at least 25k and they have only offered 16k without providing any valid reasons despite many requests and long delays. Their attitude has been appalling.
