Hi I'm about to buy my first horsebox. Can any of you tell me what is involved in getting a 7.5 tonne wagon through an MOT. How much does an MOT cost and do you have to do anything special, i.e. book it in anywhere?

You book for a test at your nearest VOSA test station ,through the centralised VOSA booking system ,on 0300 1239000. Alow a couple of weeks for the appointment, though if you phone up each day ,they may offer a cancelation booking. Test costs £95.00. VOSA do produce a booklet about what they look for,but you may be better off getting a good mechanic to check it over. ALWAYS GET A MECHANIC TO CHECK ANY BOX YOU PLAN ON BUYING. Please please please ,this is so important.

I think the plate is about £95 but in honesty I take mine to a HGV garage and have them take it through for me...purely because it a old box and if it fails on minors they will repair them there and then then whistle it through again if known to the station ;)... also if it gets stickered up none road worthy they tend to have the means to get it back to there garage...

test cost around £50 i think. I normally get my mechanic to inspect it service first and repair anything needs be before the test then he drives it there. Brings it back and that is either it or he needs to tweak something first the re test it.

My last service bill was around £ 1200

They are now cutting down on the amount of tesing done at VOSA centers, probably so they can shut them all down in the future, so you will need to book several months in advance, I kid you not! Failing that you can use the non VOSA centers they go out to, which is what we had to do, but it costs around an extra £45, for a lane fee. We paid £140 this year all included I think, the only plus side being it was 10 minutes down the road, rather than 45.
You have to book directly with the test centre in this case, but VOSA will tell you where they are.
