My husband had a beautiful horsehair engagement ring made for me with some of Gypsum's tail, but sadly, it isn't withstanding the rigors of day-to-day life, most of which is at the barn. With all that entails. Water. Dirt. Mud. Sweat (yours and theirs!). Etc.

We're looking for someone to make a new one that will be resilient enough to cope with the barn. I know there have been other threads recommending people who make horsehair jewelry, and we've followed those links, but there's no indications that they will be any tougher than what we've got. The epoxy resin that held the hair onto the silver just wears off over time. Husband, who is a chemist and his day job is putting coatings on things (in aerospace) to stop them from falling apart in space, thinks we need one where they fully encase the hair in something hard. So far, we've found one person (via Etsy) in Minnesota who seems to do that.

I was wondering if anyone knows of anyone a bit closer to the UK who makes horsehair rings and fully encases them or does something to make them indestructible, so you can wear them all the time.

I know it’s your engagement ring and you’re meant to wear them all the time, but the thought of wearing any ring around horses makes me feel a bit ill after hearing about them getting caught and fingers degloved 🤢 I have a lovely ring made with some of my last horse’s tail hair and if I accidentally wear it to the yard I take it off and put it in a pocket as soon as I notice. With the result that I now don’t know where it is 😂 it’ll be somewhere, tucked away “safe”. Might put it on a necklace instead when it surfaces!

Sorry, now for the potentially more helpful answer 🤦‍♀️ the ring I had done wasn’t horse hair going around my finger but a few hairs set in resin… this was mine, she does other designs though:

I had some of my dogs ashes made into a ring and they were set in glass, although I wouldn't wear it for doing the horses I wear it for everything else.

My YO had some of her favourite mare's ashes made into a heart-shaped locket and wore it for quite a while. It was very tastefully done.
She no longer wears it, as I think it was a constant reminder of her loss.

The only bit of jewellery I wear daily is an earring so I plan to get my girls hair put into an earring instead.
I’m going to ask my SIL to do it for me as she works for a local jeweller.

Would going into a small local jeweller and asking them what they could make for you be an option. My SIL doesn’t work somewhere that specialises in horsehair jewellery but they’ve done it before for people who have asked.
