As George is having to stay in a bit longer at the moment due to the turnout problems

I bought him one of those tubs of horselyx to keep him amused. Well he went at it like it was the best thing he'd ever tasted, lick lick lick - fine. Then he started getting his teeth in and taking small chunks out and smiling at me with his sticky lips

I couldn't leave it in his stable all night he'd probably eat the lot and be poorly. Any solutions?

Nope! Have the same problem with mine. Apparently once the get used to the fact they have constant access to it they stop guzzling and just take what they need. I don't want to find out how long that takes though, would cost me a fortune in licks and then probably vets bills too

I personally think Horselyx are a bit dissalusioned about their licks... they say it's the nutrients the horses go wild for, when it's blatently the mollasses and the fact that they can make a huge sticky mess with it

One of my mares can even take the lids off by herself

Mine had one in his stable all last winter and went at it like George, but after a while they must get bored of it as one lasted about 6 weeks. He had his with him all night. He used to get frustrated and chew into it and quite often found it upside down in his bed in the am, lol.

The large lick that goes in the field that is supposed to last week, lasted the boss of the field 3 days! whenever we were down there he was licking and wouldn't allow anyone else to lick, he loved it but we couldn't afford to keep him in licks

I got a field sized one & to start with, my 2 finished it in a week or 2, but each time I bought another one, it lasted a week longer until they were lasting around 6 weeks.

I don't like them now cos I've got a grey who licks it & then licks himself. You'd be amazed how much of himself he can lick... Skewbald horsie...

Mine's a fuzzy b*gger he is currently on week 3 of his first big horselyx and does seem to be licking it, but I haven't caught him yet.

On saying that when I put the lid on (because of the heavy rain), he did remove it to get to the lick

He is currently preferring his garlic buggo to the horselyx!

Don't use them - horses just don't seem to be able to ration themselves.

Just make sure he's got plenty of hay.

my horse rations himself on it.

When i bring him in, he will nibble his hay then have a few licks on his horselyx then go back to his hay again

ive had this tub for over 6 weeks now and hes still got half left

sometimes he has some when he comes in, other times he doesnt

the other day for the first time, he was even taking a few licks in between his own feed

sorry ive not answered your question as mine doesnt gobble it lol
