I have been thinking just how dodgy the horse world is.
Massive amounts of money laundering going on especially in showjumping and dressage. It’s easy disposable cash and I know one worldwide SJ stable which is just a front for cleaning cash for drugs.
Irish horse sales are not much better, Goresbridge is just a basement for slightly dodgy horses which have failed x rays/vetting if coming from a well known producer who normally sells for £££. Plus all the top prices at Monart and G4G have been fiddled. Deals done outside the ring then prices pushed up artificially inside. We have always known this happens….
As with everything it’s just a small part of the horse world but I bet everyone knows a story or two where just how dodgy the horse world is.

another reason why i'm happy to stay in my naive little dressage skool bubble I think! I know naaaaathing :p

Dressage is just as bad- there's the big dressage yard in the South West (already got a terrible reputation for links with a particular stud) that routinely injects every joint in the sales horses, for example

or the top level uk dressage trainer who bolsters the prices of horses he recommends to clients so he gets a hefty whack himself. Owner names a price, top level trainer adds the padding and gets commission from owner….

I did mean my specific one, as in the little yard I'm on ? I only ever meet normal people doing normal things ? happy to live a very insular life

LEC you must move in very different circles to me. I see people struggling to make a living doing what they love and few people living the high life from the profits selling horses. Most people that I know, don't want to sell a horse that is going well (when it's saleable) but only think about selling when it's not fulfilling their dreams (and even then, most people stick with their horses to the end). Everyone that I know who is spending serious money on horse power is spending the money made from legitimate enterprise because they love their sport and tbh don't really count the cost. There are dishonest people in every walk of life my aim is to try my best to avoid them.

i guess I know a lot of people where horses are a business, not a leisure hobby. It’s not hard to read between the lines on stuff as well. It’s like any sport. Take rugby, you can play for local 5th team once a week, you can play county standard, national division 1, premiership or for your country. Very different yet all the same sport. At premiership it’s a business not really a sport.

Yeah. Unfortunatley in the U.S there is a lot of that. Andy Kocher was suspended a few months ago for using electric spurs on his horses in Grand Prix. I think he was just trying to win the class, cash in, and keep shocking his horses. And people hide lame horses using pain drugs and sell them for so much money. Here's a good story of mine.
A year ago my trainer sold a sweet, safe horse to a lesson barn. Last month she got a message from someone who had found her on social media. It said, 'I think I have your horse. He's clearly angry, and I can't go near him."
My trainer picked him up that hour. She learned that the lesson barn(DODGY!!) had sold him. Even though my trainer had told the lesson barn that she really liked him, if they ever wanted to sell him, they should sell him back to her. My trainer called an animal communicator, and supposedly the horse had fallen over on his head and was left there for hours. He was in bad shape and lame, and had been drugged to sell. Thank god my trainer's name was on the coggins record and the lady who the lesson barn sold him to contaced my trainer. Thank god for nice horsepeople!
