I have just found out that my pony poppy has retinal detachment. Vet said on a scale of 1 to 5 (5being the worse) that 4 out of 5 in her right eye and 1 out of 5 in her left. vet wanted me to stop riding her for saftey reason's but at the moment she feel's no different to what she always has been. not as brave on her own when hacking but she only has a look she's not jumping around. no more jumping which is a shame cause that was what she was good at but not end of the world. she's in no pain but vet said there will be days when she's a bit down and probley has a headache so she has bute for a couple of days and see how she goes. if she's still fed up after a few days have to get vet back out but if she stays like she at the moment which is full of life then vet just wants to come back out every 6 months.
Does anyone else no anything about this or had a horse that it's happened to? if so what did you do?
I am gutted but vet said theres nothing that can be done with horses eyes.
Will be gratful for any advice.

Oh stroppyP that's awful news. My boy had to have an eye removed but his remaining eye {{{touches wood like mad}}} is unaffected...not the case with Poppy. I guess I would echo what your vet has said and be aware that Poppy will be seeing things very differently with such limited vision. If she were a human I'm pretty certain she would be registered blind. My boy is totally rideable now but I always have to be HUGELY aware that he can't see diddly squat on one side of his head and it has caused some pretty scary moments. Almost brained himself in the trailer when I had to move yards. And an early huge spook coz he didn't see cyclists coming up (my fault - should have been more alert) put me in hospital with broken ribs. Another thing is that if something scares him he will need to turn to see it properly and that might mean turning into traffic or off the edge of a cliff or into other horses or barbed wire... So be careful coz Poppy's sight is damaged both sides. I know there is a human treatment for detached retinas but I guess it would be impossible for horses. I do hope you can continue to enjoy Poppy and that she stays rideable for yonks yet but do take care! x

((((hugs)))) sorry nothing to add.

i used to work in an opticians and people with retinal detachment have laser treatment to put the retina back in place, do they not do this with horses? how old is your horse?

thank you. she does need to have a good look at things which she never really bothered with before. traffic she is fine. nothing has ever bothered her on the roads. vet will keep checking.when vet say's she cant see nothing then we'll call it a day. but that could be a month a year or even 6 years. no one knows. thanks for advice and i will take care.
