Horses from Dodgy dealers

My pony came from a dealer who, whilst I would not call dodgy, doesn't have the best reputation in the area... He is absolutely perfect in every way

and I love him to bits. However I was working for said dealer at the time, rode the pony regularly and knew all his little quirks

I think with dealers it really is a case of knowing exactly what you are looking for, not being swayed by what you hear and really really looking the horse over and testing him out before buying. There is no "bargain" in the dealing world.

I actually think that most dealers aren't dodgy, from buying and selling horses people are only out to make a living. Do you really think it does anything for a nice quiet life to have a client screaming like a banshie on the end of the phone every night as their new horse has done something wrong?! I actually tell people EVERYTHING I know about the horse, but its if the person chooses to listen or not! you would be suprised at the amount of people who think they know better than you and can ride something, even if you have tried to tell them they can't. However, you do get horses in that while they may now be reformed characters, in a new home they may revert back to old ways. This isn't your fault, but normally that of the nasty private seller who sold the horse they ruined to you or sent on sales livery. There isn't a dealer who I would refuse to visit, as not all horses are bad, and you just have to go in with eyes open.

I bought a 4 year old (she was 2) from a dealer that I later learnt was dodgy and had a poor reputation, at the time my OH was saying don't buy but i couldn't resist she looked really sad...I have now had her for 5 years and would never sell her, I was not an experienced rider so had to have lots and lots of lessons have had a lesson every week on her and still do but i would never sell her I feel we have grown together

The white horse in my sig was bought from a dodgy dealer...I didnt know the full details of her rep. at the time obviously, but what I've heard since made my eyes water.

He was underweight/stressed/box-walked and weaved and turned out to be a good 5 years older than his passport with horrendous hooked teeth.

However....he turned out to have a lovely nature.....still gets stressed on the odd occasion (mainly at shows..)....is very well schooled ..in fact you could call him a school master......and I love him to bits. He is tricky and a bit of a one-person horse but I wouldnt part with him for the world. The other 2 in the sig were bought privately- one from a friend, and they are both stars.

I bought a lovely little mare from a private seller once....she was an absolute git-bag and a danger to boot.....so I would say dealer or private its buyer beware!

There are 4 horses on my yard from chuck at ride irish - who according to many people on here is very dodgy and a 'no go' - can't say there has been a problem with any he is very genuine and will tell you if it has a slight issue with something.
One horse was bought for a nearly total novice to learn on and has been a saint! Will happily go and ride anything down there, he is no mug and isn't going to sell you or sit you on a loonatic! Course there are dealers who are a bit dodgier than others but at the end of the day it isn't in their best interest to gain a bad reputation - ditto 100 good sales to make a good rep and 1 bad to ruin it!

I think it takes 100 good deals make a reputation and 1 bad one to break it.

Absolutely!

No dealer can 100% guarantee what a particular horse is going to behave like in a particular home, and sometimes, horse and owner simply don't gel with one another.

I believe the difference between a good and dodgy dealer, is how the dealer handles the situation when things do go wrong...
