Horses - how much extra would you pay for a certain colour?

I must say as the owner of a dun they are a practical colour :p but mine doesnt test it that much as he is a bit of a twinkle toes about getting dirty :D But at the same time they do tend to go a manky colour when clipped.

You're lucky. This winter my Dunbo has been given the unruggred grey girl a run for her money in the 'who can get the grottiest' competition

I agree their clipped colour is also very dull. I can't wait till mine gets his new coat through as he has dapples in his summer coat :)

Now very jealous of your new boy I love connie x tbs. Please tell me your going to bring him to ely with jess in the easter hols.

I hope so. :) Although he is rather green and we've been focusing on flatwork and hacking all winter, so us beginning to attempt to leave the ground could be rather embarrassing (on my part!). He's v similar looking to Yellow pony :) Now I've FINALLY got my broken laptop back, (as of today), I shall try and take some recent pics of him to show you.

Puppy, of course you're coming! And I doubt very much you will embarrass yourself, I've seen you ride and you have nothing to worry about :)

Can someone tell me when Easter is (dh this means you!) please so I can sort us all out? Perhaps I'll move this conversation to facebook actually. Anyway, things to bear in mind, I know we can't do the 25th and I might go to stressage at the Jays on the 17th, although I'd much rather go xc so would happily skip it if required, and I need to get my trailer serviced before I go too far as I am old and have turned into a worry wort and want things to be 'just so' before I put Puppy's lovely horse on there  so we can't go next weekend. Think that is all

Ha! My lovely horse is no more precious than the awesome Brown Horse :p

I can't do the 18th, I don't think, but I've not much else booked in :)

My boy is a black Arab with a white star like Black Beauty - however in my hunt for a horse I never considered colour, certainly not black as many black Arabs are stallions. I was just looking for a good horse. I was contacted (after placing an ad) about an Arab gelding that fit what I was looking for...conformation, no inbreeding, temperament etc. and he fit the bill. The seller asked "don't you want to know what colour he is?" I said I didn't care, he seemed perfect and then she said "he's black". It has been my dream to own a black Arab but it was certainly not top of my list when looking and I never thought it would happen. He didnt cost extra because of his colour at all, he was reasonable for his great breeding and I would have bought him if he was the colour of mud, regardless!!!

To be honest, as he lives out 24/7 he is mostly muddy brown anyway and sunbleached in summer to almost a chestnut colour. I love him to bits and wouldnt swap him for the world.

Are ODRC's events still held in that really bumpy field?

Rebekah - what's his breeding?

Sorry, I'm being nosey.

Be as nosey as you like! His breed name is AH Danza Bey (R Ali Bey X My Midnite Dancer) one of Anne Hawke's progeny, I believe. Bey Shah and Ali Jamaal lines. Mostly Polish and Egyptian I believe. I'm not good at this stuff and actually had to go on Allbreedpedigree.com to look it up as I had forgotten!!! His stable name is Anubis though :-)

Anubis is a brilliant stable name for an Egyptian arab. Much better than BH (my horse's stable name!)

I had a horse called JD years ago so I'm with you there! Poor Anubis does get terrible nicknames though...Nuni, Nube, Banana Boy, Tw*t, Ponce etc!!! I love him to bits but I do tease him! :D

Its in a field but I wouldnt say it was bumpy at least it hasnt been since I got the yellow pony. Rampton show is super bumpy though if thats the one your thinking of??? Ask JT as shes been there a few times, I'm worrying I havnt noticed now :o. If jess tells me who you are on fb I have photos of it if you want to see if its the same field.

Rebeckah - he is very nice!

Thanks - your horse is a stunning looking creature! I am such a sucker for buckskin, I wish they did Arabs in that flavour!

Nope it's definitely Over that I am thinking of. I went a few (4ish?) years ago and the ground was v uneven and the rings too small... :o

I've added you on FB & sent you a message ;)

The price is dictated by supply and demand and the more people that want a particular colour the higher the price will be , who can afford to sell something far below its market value ??? I also wonder why does everyone assume a pretty coloured horse has bad conformation ? my smoky silver black stallion carries 2 silver genes , 1 cream gene , he has sired world and national champions and was 2004 AMHA world top three and AMHR National Top Ten (America) as well as being supreme grand champion of Ireland , hes a multiple grand champion stallion and he recently added UKAMHS Honour Roll Champion senior horse among his many titles , he can produce buckskins ,palominos, cremellos , silver bays , silver blacks etc but people dont buy his foals because of the colour ..they buy them because they win
and yes hes a miniature but I spent far more money on buying him and some good mares than I ever did on the 17hh irish sport horses I used to own , of course there are some rubbish coloured horses as there are plenty of rubbish plain coloured horses but dont assume colour equals bad conformation

I don't assume that at all, Ive seen some very nice champagne horses with good confo/breeding/temperament etc.. the whole lot. :) I also think that Legrande (mentioned earlier in the thread) had super conformation.

However, I started this thread due to seeing two adverts for horses with poor/not great conformation that were very expensive due to their colour.

I dont assume an unusual colour horse (wont call it 'pretty' as Im not keen) has bad conformation at all :). But Ive certainly seen horses that are 'not very good' be chosen over a nice horse of a plain colour, just because of its unusual colour.

And I know of a very fancy looking palomino pony thats never sound for more than a couple of weeks at a time, I have no doubts at all if it was a bog standard bay it would have been up the road a long time ago :)

I said pretty , rather than unusual colour because palomino etc isnt unusual lol plus pretty can also include piebald/skewbald ,frame overo , blue eyes etc :-)

i know what you mean, but I dont find most of those (any) pretty at all, so different uses of the terms I suppose :)

eta Also I said the palomino was fancy looking, not unusual ;)

I think what this thread was trying to say was that if you had 2 horses, exactly the same (age, breed, conformation - impossible I know) side by side, who would pay extra for one that was an 'unusual' colour - especially when it was a gelding who couldn't be used for breeding.. No-one is knocking unusual horses, just saying if they would pay extra for one or not :) Your boy looks gorgeous!

You've hit the nail on the head Rhino! :D Or to put it another way - if you had for example £3k and liked two geldings (one bay and super, the other one 'fancy coloured' and average) would you rather have the extra quality or the colour?

I did think that one horse in particular would have been priced at 50% less if it had been bay.

My favourite colour is blue roan but I would not pay extra to have one.

However I would not buy a light coloured horse or one with lots of white due to laziness as they are hard work to clean. I have a bay with a blaze and white socks and it is bad enough to have to try and keep his socks clean before a show.

He is a new forest and bay is quite a common colour for New Forests. I really like connies but they tend to be grey and it is hard to get a different coloured one.

In summer my pony goes a lighter colour which I call Bun as it is sort of dunnish but sort of bay as well
