(Also in NL..) Many years ago the owner of my loan mare, Lady, nearly lost her when a large lump covering her side basically exploded..To this day the vets don't know what it was and she has a large scar down her side which usually doesn't affect her, however there is always a very small soft lump at the bottom.

Every now and then it flairs up and the lump becomes hard and her teats also become swollen and i can 'milk' a liquid from them. She has seen a vet about this, and a course of antibiotics clears everything up.

I can't remember if last time I carried on as normal or if she had to have time off. Is it usual to stop exercising a horse on antibiotics? Should I just walk and see how she is? Or just leave her?

Sorry for the long rambling post..

I often keep working mine fully on antibiotics, mine often get them as a precaution so they can carry on competing though.

I guess it depends why the horse is on antibiotics. If it's for a condition that affects their movement or rubs when tack and rider are on board, or is making them feel down and ill and off their food etc, then I certainly wouldn't ride. Would you still go into work/go to the gym/etc if you were on antibx for a nasty infection and you felt awful?

Antibx as a precaution? Wow! I would have thought that was one of the fastest routes to antibiotic-resistant infections? GPs don't do that any more for exactly that reason.

They will have something that requires antibiotics, usually a cut from XC, they will have a few sachets just to make sure that they dont get an infection so that they can compete again. never caused me any problems so far.

No it doesn't affect her movement at all and she is fine in herself! I am taking her for a walk this morning to see how she is, if she doesn't feel right I will just take her home and give her a few days off! Thanks for the replies
