Hi

What rug weight do your horses have on on a night at the moment?

I am struggling to decide - have left 50gs on tonight and it feels cold now, debating going out to change them!

: )

Mine have none on yet but have nice fluffy coats already! I'm doing blanket clips next week and they will have lightweights! The rest of the yard all have rugs on but I refuse to rug until I clip!

mine are still in 50's, though have had to swop one for a 100g tonight but only because his 50g got flithy today so i've had to dunk it! So using the 100g until his 50's dry! Won't be going up to middleweights until october at least!

No fill lightweights at the moment. If it gets a bit colder I will still only put lightweights on but with necks. one of me horses is a TB x and the other a dutch warmblood. Both are doing well but being fed 2 x a day now.

I am hoping I can keep my horses out until at least the middle of october.

No fill lightweight at the moment, only because he is prone to rainscald, otherwise he would still be rugless. Elderly wb, and in a fairly exposed area, but he is a hardy old thing.

uh-oh I have already confessed to this on another thread but I put my horses medium weight on last night as she was cold in her rainsheet. BUT is is Scotland and the temperature has fallen ranging form 8-14 but it does have a windchill factor.

Plus the rug is a bit short and draughty! I checked her at 5pm and she wasnt too hot.

all mine still naked. live out all year round so try to leave as long as possible. 2 of mine stayed naked all winter last year and were still overweight coming into spring.

No plans to rug for a while yet unless we get prolonged heavy rain combined with a sudden dramatic drop in temperature. They have good grazing and shelter and all, including the TB's are looking well.

I feel bad now because my tb is out in a 150g rug. Our other 13 are out unrugged and doing fine, however Rafferty really does feel the cold. He is definitely not too hot in it and is much happier so I am sure the weight is right for him, just worried about what weight rugs he will need over December/January time when the weather is really bad…. We normally try to leave rugs off as long as possible, but I had to give in to the wimps sulking when I realised the weather wasn't going to get any better!

no rug yet unless it really hammers down with rain and then she's had a "mac" (i.e. lightweight, no fill) just to keep her dry as she's on very restricted grazing and the bit of field she's in doesn't have any shelter. It's still really warm. Have you seen the forecast for the weekend? 23/24 degrees on Sunday!

My sec d will stay out 24/7 unrugged - he's a Welsh cob and lives in the environment he was bred in in the Welsh hills...loads of natural shelter, looking quite furry already, been out all his life so far..BUT he is just 2 so will be keeping my eye on him-condition wise, though to be honest, he seems to be a fresh-air good doer and so if he does drop much will probably feed more haylage rather than rug and also plan to bring in at night when the predicted weeks of snow hit us...though probably more for my ease of looking after him right next door to the kitchen instead of struggling through deep snow carrying hay/haylage and water!

hooray someone else! All the horses around us have rugs on and in the field i am in 1 has a no fill sheet and the other 3 (incl mine) have some form of filling! I think it does depend on your horse and where you live. Its down to 8 at night in Scotland :)

The TB is out in her medium weight and has been for the past few nights, its been quite wet and miserable here- only because she drops weight at the drop of a hat and planning on keeping her out all winter -we are quite rural and it does get cold at night. The others are naked though :)

Two of mine are in mediums, one in 100g. The two in meduims will be coming in at night shorty and the one is actually the wimpyest horse i've literally ever come across. Went to change his rug this morning into a light weight and he was actually pretty chilly, it was 12 degrees at this point. I would bring him in sooner but he loves being out. They all have access to field shelter. Other liveries range from unrugged, l/w's and meduims.

Skinny Minnie (Three mahoosive feeds a day!) is in a wide range Bucas, as I really can't risk him losing any condition, as it's taking so much effort to put on! He also has a very thin coat. The others are fatter, and considerably furrier, and naked. They will stay naked until 2 are clipped, and the old boy begins to look jealous! He, however, will be very, very furry, and only gets rugged in the depths of winter, in consideration of his seniority. I do use Accuweather, which gives "realfeel" temperatures, taking into account windchill etc. I also have to remind myself that although I might shiver at certain temperatures, I do not have a thick leather coat on, covered in thick greasy fur. ;)

I've never heard of accuweather, so just gone and checked our weather forecast! errrm, it says we are supposed to have rain NOW and all night for my post code area. only problem is, we have clear skies??? lol

None of mine are rugged yet as it is still mild here (most nights still in low double figures) with very little rain.

If the weather goes below 10 overnight then Nadia gets a no fill lw just to take the edge off the cold.
I guess the overnight turnout will stop at some point in October, depending on how bad the weather gets but I'll assess at the time when heavier rugs need to go on.

Skinny TB type pony is out in a lightweight and is doing well. Won't start putting any more on until she needs something in the day, then it'll be light in day and 40g at night most likely.
