one of my yougsters pricked his eye when he was a foal and has regular check ups with a specialist opthalmologist every year as althought the initial injury settled down well with alot of intense nursing (I had a month off work!) a cataract has been slowly developing and today he is judged just to be able to see light and dark with this eye. (the ultra sound technique for removing it has been discussed but is unsuitable due to the adhesions in the eye from the initial trauma)

He has recently been backed and riding him i have noticed no difference at all in his way ofg going to any other horse I have ridden, he also enjoys jumping although I havnt done much dure to his age (4). Just wondered if anyone else had ridden a horse with one good eye?

My mum used to ride a horse with one eye (the other had to be removed due to some sort of cancer i think). She only hacked but had no problems, she was a laid back sort of horse though. xxx

Ive not ridden a horse with one eye, but my sister in laws horse has one eye and he is fine, took a while for him to adjust when he first had it removed, but he is fine now and still be ridden every day, you just have to be abit careful on the his 'no eye' side!
I also saw a one eyed horse at a 3 day event and it went really well.

My horse is blind in one eye for the very same reason - an injury as a youngster, although it happened with her previous owner so I don't know the precise details. She is no different to any other horse and does everything I would expect of a fully sighted horse, it's never been a problem at all and no-one (including county show judges!) have ever noticed

she does give her jumps a lot of room though, and I've always wondered if it affects her depth perception so she jumps a little higher just in case she's misjudged it. I wouldn't call that a problem though, it's an added bonus!

i rode a pony with one eye-and he had been doing a lot of high level PC stuff, and i jumped him and i t really doesnt seem to affect him either

i havent heard of it affecting them badly in any case

I had a pony with one eye, I even put a post up about top horses competing with one eye! My pony was amazing, he could jump anything and I had a lot of fun on him. They do adjust very quickly.

Thanks for all the responses - I had thought it wouldnt bother him as he has grown up with it gradually getting worse so its not come as a big shock to him. Just have to hop he doesnt bash it on anything now!
