'Horsewoman beats teenager's car with riding crop'

Just discussed this with my OH (non-rider). They're obviously both in the wrong.
He thinks the magistrate should have called them both up to the bench, leaned forward and banged their heads sharply together. Case dismissed.

Had the incident happened in Caithness that's more than likely what would have happened. I love my husband's tales of the Sheriff meting out justice - like the guys who got two years for robbing a shop and a further eighteen months on top for being so stupid as to pick a town with one road leading to it.

Both sound like a right pair of twonks to be honest. They wouldn't have found in his favour without due cause and the Fail only reports what it wants to. Bet if we could read the transcript of the whole thing we would find out a lot of other info.

For those saying an 18 year old shouldn't have a £30k car - why ever not?

Just read the article and not many comments but to be honest I would'nt take either's side! They both sound like they have told porkies to lay blame on the other!

Mostly because most 18 year olds I know would not be able to control a powerful car safely. I'm sure there are some very sensible and responsible lads and girls who could be trusted not to wrap themselves around a tree. But I look at the pictures of the damage my (now very responsible!) OH did to his little car as a young'un, and shudder to think of what he could have done to himself and other in an A5!

ETA And I do include myself in that too - I was daft enough in a Fiesta, I don't think a larger engine would have been a good idea for me either...

He's already got 3 points for using the phone whilst driving it states ! :O

I regularly ride and lead, on very quiet country roads. Virtually all drivers very considerate. However you get the odd ones who think if they give you a gap just big enough for a pedestrian you can fit two horses side by side. Funnily enough these are also the ones who don't look ahead and see me despite plenty of hi-viz, only look just beyond their bonnet, and drive past a passing point, stop in the narrowest part, then claim they can't reverse. Excuses I've had like last time I reversed I burnt the clutch out, too scared, don't know how to get it into reverse.

When I hacked on busy south east roads I carried the longest schooling whip in my outside hand. Whilst drivers thought nothing of cutting up my horse, they were very careful about scratching their car. Never deliberately hit a car but did waggle it if they were too close.

Ah, so that would be a "meeting of the minds". The lawyer sounds like an idot. The rider sounds worse "I cannot ride I am that scared something is going to happen". At no point in that story did she sound scared ... chasing down a car and throwing things.

I love the picture of the "yoof" downing a pint of beer - clearly irresponsible.

I see no reason 18 year olds shouldn't have an A5. It isn't that blimming special. I used to drive my Dad's cars at that age if he was feeling benevolent (actually I guess not quite that age but not much older!) and I never killed anyone :p

Anyway, they both sound like eejits.

Also I love her quote 'horses are wild animals' ummm no love, they are definitely not!

SPOILT BRAT!!!! Who has a £30K car at 18?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

saying that I am 22 and have a brand new a3 all paid for, but I have a bloody good job! He just seems like some sort of imbecile!!!!! (Hope Ive spelt that right)

The comments are irritating. Ignorant people spouting 'horse riders and cyclists don't pay road tax so shouldn't be on the road' - all that gumpf.

It's emissions tax. Ignorant pigs. We have just as much right to be on the road as cyclists and motorists.

I have a feeling this young lad's father is mates with the judge! What a crock.

Blimey not many 18year olds can afford a 30000 car.
On a serious note he was ridiculous to behave how he did and surely he has gone against the highway code by beeping his horn. Feel sorry for the woman although the whole case sounds ridiculous.

No way 1500 for damage caused by a chucked whip. My car of similar type to this one was involved in an accident ( parked, loose horse jumped on the bonnet, complete accident) you can imagine the damage, total cost 1000.00 for repairs.

What a jealous comment. If he/his parents can afford it honestly who are you to judge what kind of car it was? In essence it is no different to saying "OMG you're 50 and you still have a R reg ford fiesta, why haven't you earned more money in life". I hate inverted snobbery. It wasn't the model of the car that cased the issue...

If he went through the insurance company and a panel was scratched that is probably spot on.

Why is an 18 year old driving an Audi A5???????? All I could come up with was a 14 year old vitara....obviously doing something wrong!

Personally I think they were both as bad as each other...... When on the road you have to full concentrate on your horse and it's position, while the driver should realise it's silly and dangerous to beep a horn!
j

The area where it happened is footballers land, lots of people with very fast cars and when I read Telegraph report, I think the young man got away with it, he caused the incident, passing reving his engine on a narrow lane, he was lucky the horse did not end up on his roof or bonnet.

He got away with it so now he'll be an even more arrogant menace on the road. Until he smashes his car up horribly. Hopefully he'll live to tell the tale and not hurt anyone. If someone had taught him a bit of respect then the rider wouldn't have been put in that situation in the first place. I don't blame her one bit. Notice the little Jessie wouldn't get out of the car and talk to her...

Here here. Well said.

It wasn't the value of the car I was concerned with. It is the fact that a very new driver is driving something that powerful. I don't let my very sensible 21 year old drive my BMW and he's been driving 3 years. He's happy with his little Clio and less possibility of being tempted to speed.

So many people taking the rider's side as a) she rides and b) the driver is driving an expensive car.

I have no idea who is the worst of the two, I wasn't there. But, the court wouldn't have made a ruling on a whim and small damages can be expensive to repair if taken to main dealers (to fulfill warranties).

Where I live, as well as having some idiot drivers, we have a number of riders who are bolshy and arrogant on the road, largely because they cannot properly control the animals they have over horsed themselves with....

Both sound like they acted moronically. There is absolutely no way I would engage in a shouting match or, worse, a physical altercation when on my horse.

Sometimes other road users are inconsiderate; I find the best solution is to pass them or let them pass me as quickly and calmly as possible, so that as much distance is put between us as quickly as possible.

Shouting and throwing your whip doesn't help if your horse then spooks or driver deliberately drives into your horse.

I wish people would think more of their horses and less of their ego.

Taking down the number plate and complaining to police could have been more sensible,

A driver repeatedly sounded his horn & came at speed around a corner behind my horse. Its was my third time out on solo hack after just been broken on a very early Sunday morning. I was very fortunate to have people as witness to the incident, driver got three points & £500 fine in the end as her refused to answer police correspondence and confirm who was driving at the time. It was one of those moments your freeze and sit tight and hope for the best, but was jibbering wreck afterwards ! but was hell bent on remembering the number plate !

I don't see what the make or cost of his car has to do with it.. If your a bad driver your bad driver in all vehicles, you don't need speed to act like a fool... (I see plenty of stupid behaviour from drivers in 1 litre corsa's)..

You know some of the posters on this forum are so far removed from what I see as normal. Almost every 16 or 17 year old kid I know, including my own, drives huge 6 Litre 4-door pickup trucks. I personally wouldn't want my teenager driving around in a tinpot matchbox car so my choice is that I don't. I digress. My take on this story is that they are both at fault. I'm sure we've all seen thoughtless, silly boy racers and I'm sure we've all seen arrogant, rude horse riders.

the way i read the story is that the woman and her chum were having a nice ride out, 2 abreast so they can have a nice chinwag (and why shouldnt they, the highway code says you can ride 2 abreast and it doesnt matter if manners fly out the window as a result). young chap drives up behind and cant get past. ignorant woman is letting her mustang wander all over the road as he is trying to pass, while she is still engrossed in conversation about X Factor so he gives her a gentle reminder that shes on a public highway and should be bleeding well paying attention. the car the bloke drives or the fact he has already received 3 points on his license dont have anytbing to do with this situation. the stupid woman is completely in the wro.g imo. she should have noticed the driver coming up behind and either trotted on or stopped so he could easily overtake. common courtesy aint it. manners.
